Nous sommes confrontés à l’heure actuelle à une crise économique et sociale sans précédent, provoquée notamment par une mauvaise gestion des équilibres financiers et des politiques gouvernementales. Un souci insuffisant pour la protection de l’environnement et une exploitation abusive des ressources naturelles vient aggraver cette situation. Enfin, de nombreux conflits régionaux trouvent leur source dans des revendications locales et alimentent de multiples tensions géopolitiques à l’échelle internationale. Si ce phénomène n’est pas nouveau, il pourrait néanmoins prendre une envergure incontrôlable. Seuls les décideurs, la société civile et les individus peuvent y remédier en s’engageant pour une répartition plus juste des richesses.

Nous avons tous un rôle à jouer dans la construction d’un avenir pour nos enfants. C’est également dans cet esprit d’ouverture que nos fondations soutiennent un programme éducatif inédit conçu par le prestigieux Théâtre de l’Odéon et destiné aux quartiers défavorisés, notamment en banlieue parisienne. Le mécénat, comme l’ensemble de notre action philanthropique, développe par ailleurs l’émergence de synergies dans nos différents axes de rayonnement. En témoigne ce rapprochement extraordinaire de l’histoire musicale et d’une conversation entre religions conçu par l’audacieux Jordi Savall dans sa composition intitulée Jérusalem.

SANTE & RECHERCHE
Dans le domaine médical, la Fondation Ophtalmologique Adolphe de Rothschild à Paris, à la fois hôpital centenaire et centre de recherche scientifique, jouit d’une réputation exceptionnelle en Europe liée aux neurosciences et aux troubles de l’oeil. A Genève, le Mémorial de Rothschild a initié une collaboration sans précédent avec l’Université par la création d’une chaire pour l’étude des maladies neuro-dégénératives.

ENVIRONNEMENT
En Afrique, nous soutenons activement le South African College of Tourism, sous l’égide de la Peace Parks Foundation, qui forme chaque année des centaines de jeunes femmes à l’écotourisme et à une gestion responsable des ressources naturelles.

DIALOGUE INTERCULTUREL & ENTREPRENEURIAT SOCIAL
Grâce aux partenariats noués avec de prestigieuses universités, nous encourageons l’élaboration de nouveaux modèles éducatifs pour répondre à des besoins sociaux réels. Ainsi, le programme Ariane de Rothschild Fellowship, lancé récemment avec la Columbia Business School et d’éminents professeurs de l’Université de Cambridge, rassemble à New-York des lauréats juifs et musulmans et propose un cursus unique qui réunit entrepreneuriat social, sciences politiques et dialogue interculturel. ARTS & CULTURE
We believe in the essential role that art can play as a vehicle for knowledge and social inclusion. A close relationship has been fostered in Geneva with the Théâtre Forum Meyrin. which  makes a wide range of cultural activities accessible to disadvantaged communities through interactive workshops. We also support an ambitious educational program implemented by the prestigious Théâtre de l’Odéon to promote an exposure to creative writing and performance in the Paris banlieues. In the arts as with our other areas of involvement, we encourage the emergence of synergies. For example, the Foundations give their patronage to famous maestro Jordi Savall, whose outstanding composition Jerusalem provides a unique bridge between musical investigation and intercultural dialogue.

HEALTH & RESEARCH
In health, the Fondation Ophtalmologique Adolphe de Rothschild in Paris enjoys an outstanding reputation as a centenarian hospital and scientific center in neurosciences and ophtalmology. Likewise, the recently-established Rothschild Professorship has initiated an unprecedented collaboration with the University of Geneva in the research of neurodegenerative diseases.

ENVIRONMENT
In conservation and capacity-building, we support the PeaceParks Foundation in Southern Africa, which every year trains hundreds of young women in ecotourism and the management of natural resources. In Switzerland, we have accompanied the take-off of La Libellule, which is developing successful tools to raise environmental consciousness, particularly amongst the youth.

SOCIAL ENTREPRENEURSHIP & INTERCULTURAL DIALOGUE
Through our partnerships with top-level universities, we favour the design of innovative teaching models. To this end, the Ariane de Rothschild Fellowship was launched in 2009 with Columbia Business School and Cambridge University. This unique initiative invites mainly Muslim and Jewish social entrepreneurs to follow an intensive curriculum in New-York, which includes business, humanities and dialogue workshops. The program provides an innovative approach to cross-cultural dialogue by building a solid network of Muslim and Jewish Fellows who share a common purpose in creating sustainable change. It reflects the Foundations’ general philosophy in promoting the application of business acumen to social engagement.

L'ÉCOLE BOULLE

L'éducation et la transmission des métiers d’art constituent une priorité pour les Fondations Edmond et Benjamin de Rothschild. Par leur partenariat avec l’école Boulle, leur ambition est d’aider les jeunes talents d’aujourd’hui et de demain à devenir des créateurs accomplis. Les Fondations les invitent à approfondir leurs compétences et leurs connaissances par le biais de projets artistiques et pédagogiques.

L’Ecole Boulle : entre tradition et modernité

L’Ecole Boulle est la 1ère école de France pour l’enseignement des métiers d’art et des arts appliqués.

Par son prestige et sa volonté de faire cohabiter savoir-faire traditionnels et concepts novateurs, elle constitue un véritable «conservatoire du geste et laboratoire d’innovations».

Les Fondations encouragent ouverture et création au sein de l’école

Accompagnement de voyages pédagogiques
Les Fondations ont mis sur pied un programme ambitieux de bourses de voyage qui permettent aux élèves de participer à différents séjours d’étude et de découverte, les « classes transplantées » : Lisbonne, Vézelay, Bâle, Milan, Duisburg, Barcelone, Venise…

Ces voyages font partie intégrante du cursus et du processus d’évaluation annuel. A leur retour, les étudiants exposent le fruit de leurs travaux dans un espace dédié au sein de l’école en vue de l’obtention de leur diplôme.

Echange exceptionnel avec le Japon pour encourager l’innovation
Les Fondations ont participé à la mise en place d’un échange entre l’école Boulle et la Tohoku University, école d’art japonaise. Le Japon constitue en effet un lieu d’avant-garde pour le design produit, l’architecture et le packaging. D’autres partenariats similaires avec des écoles d’art ou de design étrangères (Italie, Etats-Unis, Espagne, etc.) verront le jour au cours des prochaines années.

L'ACADÉMIE DU SPECTACLE ÉQUESTRE DE VERSAILLES

Les Fondations Edmond et Benjamin de Rothschild ont contribué à la création de l’Académie du Spectacle Equestre de Versailles. Une formation complète dédiée à l’univers équestre et à l’enseignement de disciplines artistiques.

L’Académie du Spectacle Equestre : excellence et précision

Imaginée et créée par Bartabas, l’Académie rend hommage aux arts équestres. Elle oeuvre pour la transmission d’un savoir et d’une sensibilité issus du Grand Siècle français. Les écuyers, venus du monde entier, y trouvent un cadre pédagogique exemplaire qui unit la connaissance du cheval aux disciplines artistiques liées à l’art équestre.

L’Académie présente ses créations lors de festivals tels que les Nuits de Fourvière à Lyon ou les Fêtes de Nuit du Domaine de Versailles. Récemment, le spectacle « Opus 2008 » a offert un très bel exemple de cet enseignement fait d’écoute, de persévérance et d’humilité.

Une école originale soutenue par les Fondations dès son origine

Par l’exigence, la recherche de perfection et l’engagement dont elle fait preuve, l’Académie du spectacle équestre partage les convictions des Fondations. C’est la raison pour laquelle ces dernières ont accompagné pendant plusieurs années la création et le rayonnement de cet enseignement unique.

L’ODÉON - THÉÂTRE DE L'EUROPE

Mécènes de l’Odéon, les Fondations Edmond et Benjamin de Rothschild soutiennent en particulier les programmes novateurs tournés vers la jeunesse et les compagnies émergentes.

L’Odéon : vivier artistique européen

Construit en 1782, l’Odéon a été promu théâtre national en 1971. C’est un théâtre de prestige et de proximité à la fois. En témoignent la grande salle historique dans le 6ème arrondissement à Paris et les Ateliers Berthier plus récemment près de la périphérie.

L’Odéon développe un répertoire tant classique qu’expérimental. Une nouvelle génération d’artistes français et européens s’y produit en défendant un théâtre d’exception, accessible au plus grand nombre.

Jeunesse et ouverture au coeur du partenariat

Sensibiliser les jeunes au théâtre
Les Fondations soutiennent des projets de sensibilisation théâtrale destinés aux jeunes :

Les participants sont fréquemment invités à assister à un spectacle et à rencontrer un comédien. Les Fondations ont ainsi soutenu la mise en oeuvre d’un projet pédagogique autour des Trois contes de Grimm, dans une nouvelle adaptation d’Olivier Py, Directeur de l’Odéon.

Initier les élèves à la pratique théâtrale

Les Fondations contribuent à la création d’ateliers de pratique artistique pour les élèves de zone d’éducation prioritaire (ZEP). L’Odéon sort ainsi de ses murs pour toucher les jeunes dans leur environnement quotidien. Il invite également ce nouveau public à pénétrer dans ses salles.

Dans cet esprit, l’interprétation des Sept contre Thèbes d’Eschyle a connu un réel succès en 2009, à la fois dans la grande salle historique comme au sein de divers centres culturels.

Promouvoir les compagnies émergentes
Les Fondations partagent avec l’Odéon l’ambition de faire connaître le travail de jeunes compagnies prometteuses au grand public. Elles accompagnent le Théâtre dans cette démarche inédite. Les Fondations apportent ainsi leur soutien au Festival Impatience, qui permet à des compagnies émergentes de se produire sur les différentes scènes de l’Odéon.

La 1ère édition de ce festival unique s’est déroulée en mai 2009, avec succès. Elle a révélé la créativité et le professionnalisme des jeunes compagnies invitées ainsi que l’attrait du public pour des spectacles inventifs et originaux.

LE PRIX ARIANE DE ROTHSCHILD POUR LA PEINTURE

Le Prix de Peinture Ariane de Rothschild possède une véritable originalité en permettant la détection de jeunes talents sélectionnés par un jury international. Il offre au lauréat la possibilité inédite d’un travail en studio et d’une formation théorique au sein d’une école prestigieuse.

La Slade School of Fine Art, résidence de l’art contemporain

Fondée en 1871, la Slade School of Fine Art développe l’excellence autour de la peinture, de la sculpture et des médias électroniques.

Cette école basée à Londres accueille une centaine d’étudiants dans des programmes de master et de recherche dans le domaine de l’art contemporain.

Prix Ariane de Rothschild : une résidence artistique unique

Le Prix Ariane de Rothschild s’inscrit dans la tradition novatrice des Fondations. Le Prix adopte une vision ouverte de la peinture : il inclut d’autres supports artistiques tels que la photo, la vidéo, l’installation, dans la mesure où ils permettent d’interpréter sous un angle moderne les techniques traditionnelles de peinture.

La sélection du lauréat s’effectue par un jury prestigieux qui inclut notamment le MoMA et le New Museum de New-York, la Tate Modern de Londres et d’autres experts de l’art contemporain. Avant la remise d’un 1er prix, l’ensemble des oeuvres sélectionnées fait l’objet d’une exposition ouverte au public et de la publication d’un catalogue.

Lancé au Portugal en 2005, le Prix a été à nouveau organisé en 2008 en Belgique. Le pays retenu pour une nouvelle version du Prix sera annoncé prochainement.

L'OEUVRE DE PROTECTION DES ENFANTS JUIFS

L’oeuvre de protection des enfants juifs (OPEJ) est née au lendemain de la 2ème guerre mondiale du besoin d’accueillir les enfants juifs dont les parents avaient été déportés.

Soutenue dès son origine par les Rothschild, l’OPEJ a conservé sa mission initiale d’accompagner les jeunes en leur offrant un cadre structurant pour faire face à leurs difficultés et aux défis de la société. Fidèle à son histoire et tournée vers l’avenir, l’action de l’OPEJ s’inscrit actuellement dans une démarche résolument ouverte et multiculturelle.

L’OPEJ : accueil, protection et éducation pour les enfants et adolescents

L’OPEJ accueille dans ses 2 Maisons d’Enfants à caractère social des jeunes confiés par les pouvoirs publics parce qu’ils ont besoin d’un cadre de vie où s’épanouir. Ces jeunes sont pris en charge par des professionnels : éducateurs, psychologues, orthophonistes, etc. Ils les encouragent à bâtir leur identité et les accompagnent dans leur insertion sociale.

L’OPEJ propose également un Service d'Action Educative en Milieu Ouvert (A.E.M.O.), qui offre à des jeunes en difficulté un accompagnement éducatif et psychologique au sein de leur famille.

Trois Clubs de Prévention Spécialisée soutiennent enfants, adolescents et jeunes en difficulté personnelle, familiale, sociale ou professionnelle par des équipes de travailleurs sociaux.

Enfin, l’OPEJ est également à l’écoute des familles en difficulté avec sa Maison des Familles et des Cultures créée en 2003 pour rétablir les liens sociaux et culturels de la famille.

Education et responsabilité sociale : un engagement historique des Fondations

Au travers de leur partenariat historique avec l’OPEJ, les Rothschild et leurs Fondations accompagnent la jeunesse et les familles en difficulté. Elles encouragent en particulier un enseignement de premier ordre et une aide psychologique.

Partage, dialogue et ouverture caractérisent à la fois l’action de l’OPEJ et les valeurs des Fondations.

LES GRANDS ATELIERS - PREGNY 2001

Présidées par des mécènes exceptionnels, les Fondations Edmond et Benjamin de Rothschild rendent hommage aux traditions artisanales. Elles partagent ainsi l’ambition des Grands Ateliers de France de placer l’éthique sur le même plan que la qualité. En 2001, le manège du château de Pregny, tout juste restauré, est devenu le théâtre d’une exposition hors du commun des Grands Ateliers de France.

Les Grands Ateliers de France : la passion de l’artisanat

Fondée en 1993 par Jean Bergeron, l'association des Grands Ateliers de France rassemble des artisans partageant la même éthique de la qualité et une véritable passion de l’objet. Restaurateurs et créateurs perpétuent leur art sur plusieurs générations en travaillant le bois, le cuir, le verre, le tissu, le métal, la pierre ou les matériaux rares.

Cette association regroupe 44 maisons de renom représentant une multitude de métiers de la main. Elle a pour gage de qualité la sélection qu’ils s’imposent entre artisans, à coeur ouvert mais à vote secret, aucun ne veut se permettre de décevoir les autres. Les Grands Ateliers de France invitent leurs membres à pousser plus loin dans la perfection grâce à la confiance qu’ils s’accordent entre eux.

Exposition de Pregny : le cabinet des curiosités des Grands Ateliers dévoilé

En 2001, Ariane et Benjamin de Rothschild ont invité les Grands Ateliers de France à célébrer la restauration du manège du Château de Pregny en participant à l’exposition intitulée « Objets Précieux, Objets Curieux, Matériaux Rares et Métiers Rares ».

Le manège a ainsi épousé sa nouvelle vocation culturelle et accueilli le temps de l’exposition les artisans d’art et leurs oeuvres mettant en lumière des techniques et des matériaux exceptionnels. Cet étonnant cabinet de curiosités témoigne des valeurs partagées par les Fondations et les Grands Ateliers : la passion pour les traditions artisanales et le souci de les préserver et de les perfectionner.

LE THÉÂTRE FORUM DE MEYRIN

Situé en périphérie de Genève, le Forum Meyrin est devenu grâce à la sensibilité, la pertinence et l’intelligence de sa programmation un haut lieu culturel de la région. Les Fondations sont fières de cette collaboration qui contribue au rayonnement artistique du Canton de Genève auquel elles sont particulièrement attachées.

Forum Meyrin : exigence artistique et engagement social

Le Forum Meyrin joue un rôle essentiel au sein de la collectivité genevoise. Au travers de l’art, il propose un questionnement citoyen et réunit enfants, familles et artistes. Sa programmation variée et originale permet de tisser un dialogue artistique dynamique et vivant qui favorise la construction de liens sociaux solides. Eveillant les consciences, sollicitant les sensibilités, le théâtre joue un rôle fondamental. Le Forum Meyrin propose une grande variété de spectacles ouverte à tous les publics. Accordant une large place à l’éducation, il propose également de nombreux ateliers. Lieu d’exposition, il brasse une foule locale et devient le point de repère culturel de la région.

Les Fondations et le Théâtre Forum Meyrin : une collaboration réussie

Les Fondations se réjouissent depuis plusieurs années du soutien apporté au Forum Meyrin. Destinées à séduire un public nombreux, les différentes propositions faites aux spectateurs expriment une exigence qualitative, un engagement social et culturel profond et plus largement un objectif humaniste partagé par les Fondations. Elles collaborent au développement des activités culturelles de la région genevoise depuis de nombreuses années et l’offre du Forum Meyrin les a séduites car il sait honorer sa mission d’excellence et de diversité.

Il propose de prestigieux spectacles internationaux et accompagne étroitement des projets locaux, tant artistiques qu’associatifs. Le centre mène un véritable projet pédagogique et social en organisant des événements (rencontres, goûters des sciences, ateliers d’écriture…) pour aller au devant des publics jeunes, des milieux immigrés et des personnes âgées.

Au travers de leur partenariat avec le Théâtre Forum Meyrin, les Fondations ouvre l’accès à un art sensible, audacieux et jamais oublieux de la cité.

LES ÉDITIONS ARTULIS - CAHIERS DE L'ÎLE DU DIABLE D'ALFRED DREYFUS

La Maison Artulis s’est spécialisée dans l’édition des beaux livres en portant un regard particulièrement attentif sur leur confection, venant accompagner une réflexion sur les textes. Les Fondations Edmond et Benjamin de Rothschild, mécènes historiques d’un artisanat d’exception, partagent avec les Editions Artulis la conviction que le soin apporté à la facture d’un ouvrage revêt une importance unique au même titre que son contenu. Elles ont ainsi apporté leur concours à l’édition d’un ouvrage sur les écrits du capitaine Dreyfus à l’Ile du Diable, homme d’honneur qui mérite déférence parce qu’il n’a jamais plié.

Les Editions Artulis : le livre comme objet d’exception

Forme et contenu désignent la singularité, la préciosité et la rareté des beaux livres comme enjeux de distinction : c'est là tout le pari des Editions Artulis. Ouvertes depuis 1998, elles se proposent de mettre en scène les textes et leurs supports, sans hésiter à les confronter aux plus récentes technologies. Les soins apportés au choix des papiers, des encres et des reliures soulignent l'importance donnée au goût d'écrire et d'éditer. Ces éditions suscitent une réflexion sur la place que peut prendre un livre dans sa représentation actuelle. Elles sont par ailleurs liées avec la question du politique et du langage.

Le projet des Fondations et des Editions Artulis : écrin unique pour un homme d’honneur

Les Fondations sont attachées en premier lieu à la protection et à la transmission des métiers d’art. C’est ainsi que les Editions Artulis ont su les séduire par leur démarche exigeante et singulière. Elles ont choisi d’apporter leur soutien à la parution d’un ouvrage sur les Cahiers de l’Ile du Diable d’Alfred Dreyfus.

Alfred Dreyfus quant à lui reste une source d’inspiration pour le courage, la probité et le combat qu’il incarne. Comptant parmi les fondements républicains, « l’affaire » et l’homme qui la suscita menèrent les Rothschild à réaffirmer leur citoyenneté et leur engagement social en France.

Cette édition exceptionnelle, inclut la transcription des notes, un appareil critique et le fac-similé d’un des cahiers. Elle sera accompagnée d’une édition numérique consultable sur le site des Éditions Artulis. Elle permet de comprendre comment un être humain, privé de tout, prend appui sur les humanités pour continuer à vivre. Ce témoignage précieux sera ainsi diffusé à grande échelle et viendra nourrir une réflexion sur la justice, l’antisémitisme et le refus de la haine sous toutes ses formes.

LE MUSÉE DU LOUVRE]

Les Rothschild comptent parmi les principaux donateurs et mécènes privés du Musée du Louvre depuis le XIXème siècle. Les Fondations poursuivent à l’heure actuelle ce soutien exemplaire des collections du Musée du Louvre.

Le musée du Louvre

Le plus célèbre musée du monde regroupe huit départements (Peintures, Sculptures, Arts Graphiques, Antiquités orientales, Antiquités Egyptiennes, Antiquité grecques étrusques et romaines, Objets d’Art, Art de l’Islam).

Né sous la Révolution, en 1793, Le Louvre réunit les collections Royales, Impériales et Républicaines, oeuvres nationales de premier plan que la première République a destiné à la Nation Française, et à l’humanité entière.

Le mécénat de la maison Rothschild a contribué à enrichir de façon remarquable les collections de divers départements, depuis le Trésor de Boscoréale, nombre de peintures de premier plan, et – concernant le mécénat spécifique du baron Edmond de Rothschild – la célèbre collection du baron Edmond de Rothschild, fleuron du département des Arts graphiques.

L’héritage du Baron Edmond de Rothschild

Grand connaisseur, expert, collectionneur et mécène, le Baron Edmond de Rothschild (1845-1934) a constitué une collection de plus de 60 000 gravures et 3 000 dessins anciens. Sa passion et sa rigueur ont contribué à faire de cette collection l’une des plus importantes collections d’art graphique au monde.

LA COLLECTION EDMOND DE ROTHSCHILD AU LOUVRE

Fidèle aux conditions de la donation, le musée du Louvre fait vivre la collection Edmond de Rothschild à travers des expositions régulières mettant en valeur différentes facettes de cet ensemble exceptionnel.

Les héritiers du baron Edmond de Rothschild donnèrent en 1935 au musée du Louvre la collection en mémoire de leurs parents. Véritable « musée de la gravure », aujourd’hui conservé au département des Arts graphiques, la collection, afin de satisfaire aux conditions de présentations voulues par les donateurs, fait l’objet de présentations régulières au sein du Palais du Louvre et hors le Louvre.

Cet ensemble d’oeuvres majeures réunissant principalement des estampes et dessins, des livres rares et deux manuscrits permet de retracer l’histoire des arts graphiques depuis le XIVème siècle jusqu’aux premières années de l’Empire, et réunit les noms des plus grands artistes qui ont forgé l’art occidental.

La Collection Edmond de Rothschild est internationalement connue pour la qualité exceptionnelle des chefs d’oeuvres qu’elle renferme.

Une exposition annuelle a lieu au Musée du Louvre.

Dessins et estampes du XVème au XVIIIème siècle

L’exposition « Chefs d’oeuvre de la collection Edmond de Rothschild. Dessins et estampes du XVème au XVIIIème siècle » fit l’objet d’une présentation à la fondation Juan March de Madrid, en 2004, puis au Louvre en 2005.

74 chefs-d’oeuvre de la collection Edmond de Rothschild inaugurèrent la présentation des oeuvres de la collection hors du musée du Louvre en apportant des précisions essentielles sur l'histoire de l'estampe et les liens unissant cet art de la reproduction à celui du dessin et de la peinture. Un catalogue de l'exposition a été publié aux Éditions Fondation Juan March.

Batailles de l’Empereur de Chine

L’exposition annuelle de la collection Edmond de Rothschild au musée du Louvre a choisit pour thème en 2009 Les Batailles de l’Empereur de Chine exceptionnel ensemble de gravures françaises du XVIIIème siècle, commandées par l’Empereur Qianlong.

Chefs-d’oeuvre de la Renaissance italienne

Disegni dal Louvre : Il Rinascimento Italiano nella Collezione Rothschild est présentée en juin 2009 à la Casa Buonarroti à Florence (du 27 mai 2009 au 14 Septembre 2009). Elle propose une sélection de quelque 100 feuilles des plus grands maîtres de la Renaissance italienne, pièces jusqu’alors pour la plupart inédites et récemment étudiées.

LA SALLE DES NOMS À YAD VASHEM

Les Fondations Edmond et Benjamin de Rothschild, par l’intermédiaire de la Fondation Rothschild à Caesarea, ont permis la construction de la Salle des Noms. Ce lieu abrite plusieurs millions de Feuilles de Témoignages, courts récits de la vie de chacune des victimes de l’Holocauste. Ce mémorial unique et poignant se trouve en Israël à Yad Vashem, mémorial mondial de la Shoah dédié à la recherche et à l’enseignement.

Une salle, deux millions de voix

Grâce à son importante collection de Feuilles de Témoignages, la Salle des Noms rend à chaque martyr juif son identité personnelle. La salle circulaire principale abrite 2 millions de ces courtes biographies. Des Feuilles de Témoignages vierges sont mises à la disposition du public pour contribuer à la recherche et à l’enrichissement de cette collection inestimable de récits de vie.

La pièce maîtresse de la Salle des Noms est un dôme de 10 mètres de haut où sont exposés 600 photographies et extraits des biographies. Ces portraits se reflètent dans un bassin d’eau situé sous le dôme, contribuant ainsi à l’atmosphère méditative du lieu.

Des Feuilles de Témoignages sont projetées sur un écran de verre dans le fond de la Salle des Noms. Les visiteurs découvrent et lisent ainsi ces récits de vie. Ils peuvent également consulter les documents informatiques ainsi qu’une base de données des noms de toutes les victimes de la Shoah.

Les Fondations et Yad Vashem : un appel à la mémoire et à la réflexion

La Salle des Noms sert de conclusion au parcours historique proposé par le Musée d’Histoire de l’Holocauste de Yad Vashem. Ce musée à la pointe de la modernité est un mémorial vivant de l’Holocauste à travers sa collection unique de récits, d’objets, de lettres, d’oeuvres d’art, de films et de documentation. En proposant avec sobriété et recueillement une vision intime de ce qu’a été la Shoah pour le peuple juif et l’humanité, la Salle des Noms constitue une conclusion poignante au parcours proposé par le musée.

LA FONDATION OPHTALMOLOGIQUE ADOLPHE DE ROTHSCHILD

En 1886, le Baron Adolphe de Rothschild exprimait sa volonté de créer un établissement hospitalier reposant sur 2 principes :
<ul><li>Spécialisation : l’ophtalmologie et les neurosciences</li><li>Excellence : être à la pointe des innovations médicales et technologiques</li></ul>
La Fondation est aujourd’hui un établissement de soins privé à but non lucratif ouvert à tous, qui participe au service public hospitalier depuis 1990. Elle a toujours associé 2 dimensions dans sa stratégie : les soins et la recherche.

L’excellence de la Fondation reconnue internationalement

Cet hôpital bénéficie des technologies de pointe et des meilleures équipes médicales et chirurgicales. La Fondation est reconnue à l’échelle internationale dans ses spécialités ophtalmologiques et neurologiques. En France, elle est classée 1ère pour le traitement de la cataracte, de la myopie et de l’anévrisme cérébral, 2ème pour le glaucome et la rétine (classement paru en 2008 dans l’hebdomadaire Le Point).

Par ailleurs, les avancées techniques de la médecine neurologique exigent des investissements de plus en plus importants. Le plateau technologique de la Fondation constitue, sur ce plan, un véritable modèle.

Un centre de recherche innovant

La Fondation a également vocation à soutenir la recherche médicale dans les neurosciences et l’ophtalmologie. L’objectif premier est de faire avancer les connaissances scientifiques tant sur le plan clinique que fondamental.

C’est pourquoi certains médecins de la Fondation dispensent également un enseignement universitaire. La Fondation se distingue ainsi par le nombre et la qualité de ses publications dans les revues médicales de référence (124 publications en 2007).

L’hôpital est associé avec le CNRS (Centre national de la recherche scientifique) et l’INSERM (Institut national de la santé et de la recherche médicale) dans le développement de programmes de recherche de pointe dans les domaines suivants :

La Fondation Ophtalmologique Adolphe de Rothschild est un projet fondateur qui constitue aujourd’hui encore la clé de voûte de l’engagement des Rothschild dans le domaine médical. Elle entretient une tradition d’excellence mise au service de tous grâce à la qualité de son personnel soignant, de ses médecins et aux avancées médicales permises par ses travaux de recherche.

L'INSTITUT DES SCIENCES ET DU VIVANT

Instance d'information et d’échange, l’Institut des Sciences du Vivant sensibilise à l’évolution de la science et à son impact sur la société par l’organisation de colloques et de rencontres.

L’Institut des Sciences du Vivant : faire le lien entre science et société

Créé en 1985 à l’initiative du Docteur Charles Mérieux et du Baron Edmond de Rothschild, l'Institut des Sciences du Vivant de Lyon mène des recherches biomédicales.

A l’heure où la complexité croissante de la science tend à l’éloigner des non-scientifiques, l'Institut des Sciences du Vivant (ISV) veut la rendre accessible et utile à tous.

Les travaux de l’ISV portent sur l’impact potentiel des découvertes scientifiques sur notre vie quotidienne : la santé, l'alimentation et l’environnement. Sont abordés des sujets divers comme le téléphone portable ou les organismes génétiquement modifiés.

L’Institut organise sur ces thématiques des rencontres entre décideurs du monde de la recherche, de la finance et de l'entreprise.

Les Fondations favorisent l’échange autour des découvertes scientifiques

Les Fondations ont construit avec l’ISV un partenariat solide et actif. Elles participent à ses côtés à l’organisation de rencontres et de colloques sur des thèmes comme « De l’animal à l’homme », le cerveau humain ou encore « Quand Dionysos rencontre Hippocrate ». Ces événements sont connus et reconnus pour les compétences de leurs intervenants et la qualité de leur auditoire.

L’aide des Fondations contribue non seulement à maintenir le niveau d’expertise de l’Institut, mais aussi à élargir les sujets de discussion aux nouvelles découvertes scientifiques liées au vivant. C’est en particulier le cas pour les neurosciences, champ de prédilection retenu par les Fondations de longue date dans le domaine médical.

LA CHAIRE DU MÉMORIAL - UNIVERSITÉ DE GENÈVE

Neurosciences et ophtalmologie constituent les thèmes de prédilection des Fondations Edmond et Benjamin de Rothschild dans le domaine médical.

Afin de contribuer aux avancées de la recherche clinique et fondamentale dans ces domaines, les Fondations soutiennent une chaire en neurosciences au sein de l’Université de Genève : le Professorat Mémorial A.de Rothschild. Elles initient ainsi un partenariat inédit en Suisse entre la philanthropie privée et l’enseignement supérieur.

L’Université de Genève, un partenaire d’exception

Créée il y a près de 450 ans, l'Université de Genève compte parmi les universités les plus reconnues en Suisse et en Europe, en particulier au travers de sa faculté de médecine. Elle dispense un enseignement de haut niveau dans les domaines des sciences, des arts et des lettres et conserve une position de renom dans la recherche de pointe.

Résidant en Suisse de longue date, les Rothschild nourrissent un attachement particulier au rayonnement et à la notoriété académique de la ville de Genève.

Les Fondations au service de l’excellence et de la recherche à Genève

Créé en 2007, le Professorat Mémorial A. de Rothschild en neurosciences est attribué pour 5 ans à un professeur de réputation internationale qui oeuvre par ailleurs au sein de l’Hôpital Universitaire de Genève.

Cet enseignement spécialisé en neurologie est destiné à former une nouvelle génération de chercheurs et de praticiens, en particulier dans le domaine des maladies neurodégénératives, telles que Parkinson ou Alzheimer. En effet, ces troubles graves constituent des défis majeurs pour le vieillissement de la population et la société de demain.

ARIANE DE ROTHSCHILD WOMEN DOCTORAL PROGRAM

Le Ariane de Rothschild Women Doctoral Program offre un soutien financier à des doctorantes à fort potentiel de l’Université Hébraïque de Jérusalem (HUJ). Face à la sous-représentation des femmes dans l’enseignement supérieur en Israël, ces bourses visent à améliorer la position académique d’étudiantes talentueuses dans différentes disciplines.

Concilier réussite académique et vie familiale

Si Israël compte de nombreuses chercheuses de talent, ces femmes rencontrent des difficultés dans leur réussite académique. Le Ariane de Rothschild Women Doctoral Program est né de ce constat. La famille étant au coeur de la culture israélienne, beaucoup de femmes israéliennes sont déjà mères lorsqu’elles atteignent le niveau du doctorat. Cette situation oblige de nombreuses étudiantes de talent à quitter le parcours universitaire pour travailler afin de subvenir aux besoins de leur famille. Le Ariane de Rothschild Women Doctoral Program aide ces femmes à poursuivre leur recherche tout en gérant leurs responsabilités familiales.

Un programme unique développé par les Fondations et HUJ pour préserver la contribution académique des femmes et promouvoir l’engagement social

Les Fondations Edmond et Benjamin de Rothschild placent la philanthropie au coeur du Ariane de Rothschild Women Doctoral Program. C’est pourquoi les étudiantes boursières sont incitées à contribuer à des programmes éducatifs pendant ou après leurs études.

En proposant aux boursières d’apporter à leur tour leur contribution à la communauté, le programme perpétue un esprit d’engagement, d’égalité et d’excellence académique.

LE PROGRAMME ROTHSCHILD-WEIZMANN POUR L'EXCELLENCE DANS L'ENSEIGNEMENT DES SCIENCES

Financé par la Fondation Rothschild à Caesarea, le Programme Rothschild-Weizmann pour l’excellence dans l’enseignement des sciences est un programme de Master destiné aux professeurs d’écoles israéliennes. Il leur permet d’enrichir leurs connaissances, afin d’améliorer la qualité de l’enseignement scientifique dans l’ensemble du pays.

Une nouvelle pédagogie des sciences pour le XXIème siècle

La Fondation Rothschild à Caesarea rejoint la préoccupation du prestigieux Institut universitaire Weizman d’améliorer les contenus et le format de l’enseignement des sciences. Le programme relève un défi unique en développant une méthodologie innovante tout en préservant une excellence académique.

Les Fondations et l’Institut Weizmann : un partenariat unique pour le développement d’un enseignement scientifique à la pointe de l’innovation

Le Programme offre une recherche de pointe, un éclairage «avant-garde» sur les problématiques contemporaines, et encourage l’innovation dans l’enseignement des sciences.
A travers 2 programmes, il offre des opportunités de développement professionnel aux professeurs de différentes disciplines scientifiques :
<ul><li>Un Master en Enseignement des Sciences, en 3 ans, développé au sein de la Feinberg Graduate School à l’Institut Weizmann</li><li>Un programme en 1 an pour le développement et la mise en oeuvre d’initiatives de terrain. Ce programme s’inscrit dans le prolongement du Master : il permet aux participants de devenir porteurs de projets innovants dans l’enseignement des sciences</li></ul>
Les étudiants du Programme Rothschild-Weizmann bénéficient également d’un accompagnement par les chercheurs de l’Institut Weizmann dans leurs projets de recherche et de développement dans le domaine de l’éducation.

LA FONDATION POLAIRE INTERNATIONALE

La Fondation Polaire Internationale mène une mission d’investigation scientifique et de sensibilisation au problème du réchauffement climatique dans les régions polaires. Les Fondations Edmond et Benjamin de Rothschild ont accompagné le lancement de cette Fondation et soutiennent son action de communication et d’éducation notamment auprès du jeune public.

La Fondation Polaire Internationale : expliquer et sensibiliser aux changements climatiques

Créée en 2002, la Fondation Polaire Internationale est une organisation scientifique basée à Bruxelles. A partir de ses travaux d’étude et de recherche scientifique aux pôles, son principal objectif est d’informer et de sensibiliser le grand public aux changements climatiques et à leurs conséquences.

Dans ce but, la Fondation publie des dossiers pédagogiques et des cd-roms destinés aux enseignants et à leurs élèves. La Fondation Polaire Internationale organise également des conférences et séminaires à destination du grand public.

Dans le cadre de l’Année Polaire Internationale — un ambitieux programme scientifique dédié à l’Arctique et l’Antarctique entre 2007 et 2009 —, la Fondation Polaire Internationale a piloté la construction de la 1ère station antarctique « zéro émission » : Princess Elisabeth.

Education, science et environnement : priorités des Fondations

Eduquer, informer, démontrer : telles sont les missions auxquelles ont contribué les Fondations aux côtés de la Fondation Polaire Internationale. Cette dernière oeuvre à mettre au point des outils permettant de stimuler l’intérêt du public vis-à-vis de la science et des changements climatiques.

Les Fondations ont notamment apporté leur soutien à EducaPoles, le site éducatif de la Fondation Polaire Internationale. Ce site vise à sensibiliser les jeunes et le monde éducatif à l'importance des régions polaires et aux changements climatiques en proposant des outils et projets pédagogiques adaptés.

LA FONDATION PEACE PARKS

La Fondation Peace Parks est née d’un projet audacieux : rétablir une cohabitation harmonieuse entre l’environnement et le développement socio-économique dans une Afrique Australe meurtrie par des années de guerre.

La Fondation Peace Parks : restaurer des espaces de paix et de développement durable

Le projet Peace Parks a vu le jour en 1997 de la volonté de 3 visionnaires : Nelson Mandela, le Prince Bernhard des Pays-Bas et le Dr Anton Rupert, un audacieux philanthrope sud-africain. Le Baron Edmond de Rothschild en fut l’un des ambassadeurs les plus actifs à l’international.

Ce projet permet aux populations transfrontalières de tourner la page des guerres civiles et de faire fructifier les ressources et la diversité naturelle de leur territoire.

10 parcs ont été créés en Afrique Australe. Ignorant les frontières nées de l’histoire coloniale, les Peace Parks rassemblent des territoires exceptionnels et favorisent une coopération interrégionale, notamment dans le domaine prometteur de l’éco-tourisme. Ainsi, ils occupent une position privilégiée pour faciliter la coopération entre les états et la stabilité régionale.

Ces parcs représentent une opportunité unique pour ces régions de s’engager dans la voie d’un développement économique responsable. Les espaces sont choisis pour la richesse de leur biodiversité, leur héritage culturel et leur potentiel de croissance.

L’éducation comme vecteur essentiel d’un développement économique durable

Pilier indispensable pour le développement économique, l’éducation fait partie intégrante du projet Peace Parks. La Fondation gère ainsi 2 établissements de formation de « rangers » et de professionnels de l’hôtellerie : le Southern African Wildlife College et le South African College for Tourism.

En formant les communautés locales à l’éco-tourisme, ces établissements bâtissent les fondements d’une économie responsable à partir d’outils éducatifs et participatifs.

Un engagement des Fondations pour l’éducation et la paix

Le projet Peace Parks réunit des objectifs inhérents aux Fondations : éducation, mobilisation des communautés locales et développement durable. Par ce partenariat, elles marquent leur désir de s’impliquer activement dans le développement de ces espaces protégés et la mise en oeuvre de programmes de formation, en particulier en Afrique du Sud et au Mozambique.

LE PAVILLON PLANTAMOUR ET L'ASSOCIATION LA LIBELLULE

En contribuant à la rénovation complète de l’orangerie du Parc Mon-Repos, rebaptisée « Pavillon Plantamour », les Fondations aux côtés de la Ville de Genève offrent au grand public un centre innovant destiné à l’apprentissage de la biodiversité locale. Ce partenariat inédit a par ailleurs veillé au respect scrupuleux des exigences actuelles en matière d’environnement.

Avec l’association « La Libellule », le Pavillon Plantamour devient un lieu éducatif tourné vers l’environnement

Afin d’atteindre ses objectifs de sensibilisation du public à l’environnement, l’association organise des expositions, des conférences et de nombreuses animations pour les écoles et le grand public.

La Libellule traduit en action une conviction fondamentale : c’est en agissant au quotidien sur le terrain que sont atteints les objectifs d’éveil et de sensibilisation.

Un exemple précurseur d’entrepreneuriat social

Les fondateurs de La Libellule ont cherché dès le début à rendre leur association indépendante financièrement. Ils ont ainsi développé un ensemble de prestations aux entreprises et aux particuliers très originales :

L’objectif n’est pas de générer un profit mais de réinvestir ces ressources dans le développement de nouveaux projets. En générant une partie de ses revenus, La Libellule maximise son impact social. Son financement ne reposant plus exclusivement sur des dons, elle s’assure un développement pérenne et soutenable.

Protection et aménagement de l’environnement : les Fondations croient au rôle clé de l’éducation

Les Fondations considèrent l’éducation et la sensibilisation comme moyens indispensables pour appréhender les défis actuels tels que les changements climatiques, la pollution, les difficultés d’accès à l’eau et les économies d’énergie. Les Fondations soutiennent ainsi le regard averti de La Libellule posé sur l’environnement naturel du Canton de Genève. La Libellule représente un bel exemple d’association maximisant son impact social mais consciente des réalités économiques.

ARIANE DE ROTHSCHILD FELLOWSHIP

Les Fondations Edmond et Benjamin de Rothschild créent, avec l’appui de professeurs prestigieux de la Columbia Business School et de l’Université de Cambridge, un programme de formation unique destiné aux entrepreneurs sociaux désireux par ailleurs de développer un dialogue interculturel authentique.

Le Ariane de Rothschild Fellowship : un concept sans précédent

Le Ariane de Rothschild Fellowship est fondé sur le dialogue et l’entrepreneuriat social. Il a pour but la création d’un réseau transatlantique d’entrepreneurs sociaux motivés par la volonté d’atteindre ensemble professionnalisme et innovation sociale.

Ce programme est organisé pendant 2 semaines sur le campus de l’Université de Columbia (Etats-Unis). Dans un cadre prestigieux et pluraliste, il propose aux participants une formation académique en entrepreneuriat social centrée sur la réussite économique et financière des projets. Il se déroule dans un contexte multiculturel tourné vers le leadership et l’échange, en particulier entre musulmans et juifs.

Un programme d’activités permet en outre aux Fellows d’appréhender la richesse et la diversité d’une ville comme New York.

Le Ariane de Rothschild Fellowship est innovant par son approche originale du métissage de l’entrepreneuriat social et du dialogue interculturel. Les Fondations créent ainsi une formation de premier plan répondant à 2 principaux objectifs :

JORDI SAVALL

La musique possède une vertu unique, celle d’inviter au dialogue et au rapprochement des cultures. C’est dans ce but que les Fondations Edmond et Benjamin de Rothschild apportent leur soutien fidèle à Jordi Savall et à ses différentes formations musicales.

Jordi Savall : virtuose de toutes les musiques

Artiste catalan et citoyen du monde, Jordi Savall est un maestro incomparable. Son répertoire s’étend des chansonniers médiévaux à l’opéra mozartien, de la Renaissance italienne à l’Orféo de Monteverdi, de la musique pour ballet aux mélodies populaires.

Il assemble et ressuscite des chefs d’oeuvre restés inconnus. Virtuose hors pair de la viole de gambe, il a notamment assis sa notoriété grâce à son interprétation de l’oeuvre de Marin Marais révélée dans le film « Tous les matins du monde » d’Alain Corneau.

Concertistes, pédagogues et créateurs érudits, Jordi Savall et son épouse, la soprano Montserrat Figueras, réinvestissent un univers empreint de connaissances et d’émotions.

Les Fondations et Jordi Savall à l’unisson

Par sa richesse, la musique joue un rôle essentiel dans l’épanouissement du métissage culturel ainsi que le développement du savoir et de l’échange. Les Fondations partagent cette vision avec Jordi Savall et Montserrat Figueras. La rigueur de leur recherche et les contrastes de leur interprétation sont une invitation permanente à la découverte et au partage.

Une collaboration étroite s’est en particulier instaurée avec les Fondations pour la composition du livre-disque Jérusalem. Une telle composition, inspirée de l’histoire tumultueuse de Jérusalem, est une ambitieuse opportunité de dialogue. Ce projet unique rend hommage à la différence et à l’unisson. Il contribue à la compréhension et la reconnaissance de l’Autre.

Les Fondations s’engagent également auprès de Jordi Savall et son épouse pour le respect des cultures en soutenant le Festival de Fontfroide, qui a lieu chaque été dans le sud de la France. L’Abbaye de Fontfroide est un lieu privilégié propice au ravissement des sens, à la réflexion universelle et au dialogue. Des musiciens du monde entier viennent y jouer un répertoire aux accents pluriethniques et participent à des tables rondes sur le thème du dialogue interculturel.

UNIVERSITÉ DE CAMBRIDGE

Les Fondations ont noué un partenariat d’exception avec l’Université de Cambridge. Elles apportent un soutien particulier au Centre for History and Economics, affilié au légendaire King’s College, et contribuent également au développement du Centre for Muslim-Jewish Relations, affilié au Woolf Institute.

Centre for History and Economics : favoriser l’interdisciplinarité

Le Centre for History and Economics adopte une démarche à la fois exigeante et audacieuse fondée sur le partage des connaissances et la transversalité de ces 2 disciplines historiquement autonomes. Cette démarche, rendue novatrice par le contexte traditionnel dans lequel elle se situe, est partagée par les Fondations. Celles-ci apportent tout particulièrement leur appui aux travaux menés par le professeur Gareth Steman-Jones et à la publication en 2009 d’un ouvrage exceptionnel intitulé « Religion and the Political Imagination ».

Le Woolf Institute : encourager le dialogue interculturel

Les Fondations partagent également la vision du Centre for Muslim-Jewish Relations, qui développe une discipline académique inédite au travers des recherches sur les liens entre les communautés juives et musulmanes dans l’Histoire. En 2008, une chaire académique portant le nom d’Ariane de Rothschild a été créée au sein du Centre, orientée plus spécifiquement sur les études médiévales dans ce domaine. Le Centre met aussi en oeuvre des programmes de formation interculturelle, par exemple pour la police, les enseignants et les établissements religieux en Angleterre.

L’Université de Cambridge est également associée au Ariane de Rothschild Fellowship, un programme de formation d’entrepreneurs sociaux désireux de développer un dialogue interculturel authentique.

DIALOGUE PRODUCTIONS

Les Fondations Edmond et Benjamin de Rothschild soutiennent l’initiative originale et l’ouverture que privilégie la compagnie théâtrale Dialogue Productions basée à Londres.

Dialogue Productions, pépinière théâtrale et dialogue interculturel

La compagnie Dialogue Productions a été créée en 1996 avec le but de développer le dialogue culturel entre le Royaume-Uni et l’Allemagne. Elle a rapidement élargi sa mission à la promotion des échanges culturels à l’échelle européenne et internationale.

Elle produit ainsi en version anglaise une sélection de pièces parfois inconnues du public britannique. Elle a notamment contribué à faire découvrir des auteurs francophones tels Eric-Emmanuel Schmidt et Wadji Mouawad.

Les créations de Dialogue Productions traitent des sujets pour la plupart contemporains. Elles alimentent ainsi une réflexion sociale, politique et culturelle liée à l’actualité.

Diversité culturelle et regard original : l’invitation de Dialogue Productions et des Fondations

Dialogue Productions a choisi le théâtre comme lieu privilégié du dialogue interculturel. Les Fondations partagent ce désir d’encourager l’échange en permettant au public anglais de découvrir un autre espace par la créativité et la connaissance.

Les Fondations ont ainsi apporté leur concours dès 2007 à la présentation à Londres et au Festival d’Edimbourg de la pièce M. Ibrahim et les Fleurs du Coran d’Eric-Emmanuel Schmidt. Elles ont renouvelé leur soutien en 2008 pour une production de Wadji Mouawad, Mariage chez les Cro-Magnons. Toutes 2 ont remporté une appréciation enthousiaste de critiques londoniens réputés parmi les plus exigeants.

Par ailleurs, Dialogue Productions mène une action sociale et éducative en offrant des ateliers gratuits aux écoles londoniennes autour de thématiques liées à ses productions.

LE CENTRE MOSAÏCA POUR LA COOPÉRATION INTERRELIGIEUSE

Situé à Jérusalem, le centre Mosaïca pour la coopération interreligieuse favorise le dialogue et la compréhension réciproque entre communautés juives et musulmanes. Il a aussi créé le Programme de Développement de l’Education Interreligieuse, avec le soutien des Fondations Edmond et Benjamin de Rothschild. Ce programme invite les professeurs et responsables d’écoles de Jérusalem Est et Ouest à travailler ensemble pour développer échanges et connaissances entre les 2 communautés.

L’école, lieu d’apprentissage et d’ouverture

Mosaïca considère qu’un véritable dialogue entre juifs et musulmans ne peut émerger qu’à l’aide d’une confiance mutuelle, en particulier sur les questions de religion. De plus, la salle de classe est le lieu fondamental où se forgent les perceptions religieuses, culturelles et sociales. En 2004, le centre Mosaïca a mis en place le Programme de Développement de l’Education Interreligieuse à Jérusalem, qui promeut des valeurs indispensables au dialogue inter-culturel.

Le programme met à disposition des enseignants des outils facilitant la compréhension mutuelle entre les deux religions et cultures.

Le programme comprend les 2 cursus suivants :
Le Cursus Rencontres pour les éducateurs des écoles juives et musulmanes. Les participants se retrouvent en groupes ou en entretiens particuliers pour échanger et s’initier au quotidien à l’ouverture à l’« Autre ». Les participants pourront par la suite être initiateurs de dialogue dans leur école.

Le Cursus de Développement de projets permet d’accompagner des projets éducatifs à long terme dans les écoles. Les éducateurs ayant pris part au Cursus Rencontres mettent en oeuvre ces projets financés par Mosaïca. Grâce à ces activités et expériences éducatives nouvelles, les enfants se familiarisent avec le monde, la culture, la religion et l’héritage historique de l’ « Autre ».

Les Fondations poursuivent avec Mosaïca un combat pour le pluralisme et la paix

En apportant leur soutien au Programme de Développement de l’Education Interreligieuse à Jérusalem, les Fondations Edmond et Benjamin de Rothschild accompagnent un dialogue authentique entre les écoles juives et musulmanes de Jérusalem. En 2007, ce programme a rassemblé des éducateurs de 16 écoles de Jérusalem Est et Ouest.

Une évaluation rigoureuse de cette première expérience a mis en évidence l’impact positif du programme sur ses participants en amenant un changement fondamental dans leur comportement, leur raisonnement et leurs préjugés ont changé.

Avec le soutien des Fondations Edmond et Benjamin de Rothschild, ce programme innovant et audacieux va étendre son action à de nouvelles écoles de Jérusalem Est et Ouest.

ACUMEN FUND

Acumen Fund est né d’un constat : la générosité philanthropique ne peut à elle seule éradiquer la pauvreté. Le fonds se donne pour mission de former des entrepreneurs sociaux de haut niveau capables de penser et mettre en place des solutions créatives aux problèmes de l’accès à l’eau, à l’énergie, au logement et aux services de santé.

Acumen Fund développe un modèle innovant et profitable d’investissement social

Trois grands principes guident les décisions d’investissement fondées sur une attente raisonnable et de rendement à moyen-terme :
<ul><li>les projets ont un impact social significatif,</li><li>ils doivent atteindre une autonomie financière,</li><li>ils ciblent un marché important, suivant les règles du BoP (Base of the Pyramid. La particularité d’Acumen Fund est d’investir uniquement dans des projets générateurs de revenus et permettant un retour sur investissement en 5-7 ans tout en s’assurant de leur pérennité. Les revenus recouvrés à échéance sont réinvestis dans le fonds et réalloués à d’autres projets.

L’ophtalmologie : un champ d’action historique des Fondations

A l’heure actuelle, les portefeuilles d’investissements se tournent particulièrement vers l’Asie du Sud et l’Afrique. Les Fondations soutiennent l’action d’Acumen Fund notamment en Inde sur un projet de cliniques luttant contre la cécité : Le Pushpagiri Eye Institute. De nombreux cas de cécité peuvent être évités de façon très simple. Ces cliniques accomplissent leur mission par :
<ul><li>Des soins gratuits pour les plus démunis et à un coût abordable pour les autres : 400 personnes ont été opérées gratuitement de la cataracte, 652 opérations au laser gratuites</li><li>La recherche ophtalmologique afin d’identifier les causes de ces maladies oculaires et trouver de nouveaux traitements</li><li>L’éducation et les campagnes de sensibilisation</li></ul>
17,000 patients ont été soignés et plus de 70 cliniques locales ont été mises en place.

Les Fondations appuient une formation unique pour entrepreneurs sociaux

Parce que l’entrepreneur manager reste au coeur du succès d’un projet, l’Acumen Fund a mis en place l’ « Acumen Fund fellowship program ». Chaque année, de hauts potentiels sont sélectionnés pour un programme d’un an comprenant une formation de 3 mois à New York suivie d’une mission précise pour accompagner sur place le développement des différents investissements.

L’objectif est de développer les compétences de ces professionnels talentueux en matière de leadership, de négociation et de compréhension des spécificités des marchés des populations à faible revenu. A l’issue d’une période initiale de formation, les Fellows sont affectés à l’un des projets d’investissement. Ils mettent alors leurs connaissances au service du projet durant une période de 9 mois, afin de contribuer à son succès et sa pérennité.

Les Fondations soutiennent l’émergence d’un modèle d’entrepreneuriat social performant

Le programme repose sur la conviction que l’investissement social peut et doit être tout aussi professionnel que l’investissement financier. Les Fondations Edmond &amp; Benjamin de Rothschild partagent cette vision avec l’Acumen Fund.

UNLTD INDIA

Unltd India accompagne l’entrepreneur social dès la création de son entreprise, qu’elle soit purement caritative ou profitable. Sa mission est triple : dénicher les meilleurs entrepreneurs sociaux, leur apporter expertise et accompagnement, les conseiller dans croissance et levée de fonds. Unltd India et les Fondations Rothschild se sont associés pour créer un fonds philanthropique spécialisé uniquement dans les entreprises génératrices de revenus développées au sein même de cet incubateur.

L’incubation : une véritable valeur ajoutée pour l’entrepreneur social

Les entrepreneurs sociaux doivent faire face à de nombreux obstacles au moment de créer leur entreprise : manque de réseau, lacune dans certains domaines (finance, marketing), solitude, stratégie, etc.

Unltd India fournit aux entrepreneurs sociaux retenus des outils nécessaires pour maximiser leur réussite :

Un accompagnement dédié et efficace

A l’heure d’une crise sans précédent, quand les financements des gouvernements et des investisseurs se tarissent, le « social business » peut apporter une réponse originale aux défis sociaux. En stimulant l’indépendance financière de telles entreprises, les Fondations Rothschild souhaitent accompagner avec intelligence la pérennité des projets incubés.

Le modus operandi de ce fonds est très innovant. Ainsi la sélection des entrepreneurs sociaux se fera en deux temps. Tout d’abord, un choix sur dossier de 20 à 30 entrepreneurs sociaux aura lieu. Puis un « boot camp » sera organisé pendant une semaine. Au cours de ce séminaire intensif, ils auront l’opportunité d’améliorer leur business plan et leur stratégie au travers de cours spécifiques. A l’issue du Boot Camp, 3 projets intégreront le fonds Rothschild-Unltd India et seront accompagnés durant deux ans.

ERT TREAT VISION

L’Equipe de Recherche Technologique (ERT) TREAT VISION étudie de manière fondamentale les liens qui existent entre l’oeil et le cerveau à l’état normal mais également à la suite d’une lésion cérébrale, chez l’enfant et l’adulte. Les Fondations Edmond et Benjamin de Rothschild accompagnent l’activité de cette équipe et soutiennent la recherche dans ce domaine.

L’ERT TREAT VISION : comprendre les liens entre l’oeil et le cerveau

Créée en 2005 par le Ministère de la Recherche et de l’Enseignement Supérieur, le Laboratoire de Psychologie et NeuroCognition (CNRS, UMR 5105), et la Fondation Ophtalmologique Adolphe de Rothschild à Paris, l’ERT TREAT VISION a pour objectif de développer une recherche pluridisciplinaire sur la fonction et les troubles neurovisuels et cognitifs.

Cette équipe, dirigée par Sylvie Chokron, Directrice de Recherches au CNRS, associe les services de Neurologie, Neurochirurgie, Neuroimagerie, NeuroRadiologie Interventionnelle, Ophtalmologie, Ophtalmo-Pédiatrie et Neuro-Ophtalmologie, et rassemble chercheurs et cliniciens sur le thème de la compréhension, la prévention, le diagnostic et la réhabilitation des troubles neurovisuels.

Grâce au soutien des Fondations Edmond et Benjamin de Rothschild et d’un certain nombre d’institutions (dont le CNRS, le Ministère de la Recherche, le Ministère de la Santé, le Ministère de l’Education Nationale, la Région Rhône-Alpes), cette équipe développe des recherches et des collaborations nationales et internationales (en particulier avec l’Hôpital Hadassah à Jérusalem) associant de nouvelles technologies comme la neuro-imagerie fonctionnelle.

Appliquer les connaissances scientifiques à la prévention, au diagnostic et au traitement : une priorité des Fondations

En partenariat avec le Ministère de la Santé et le Ministère de l’Education Nationale, et grâce au soutien fidèle des Fondations Rothschild, L’ERT TREAT VISION a pu récemment créer une nouvelle batterie de dépistage des troubles neurovisuels. Celle-ci sera proposée très rapidement par les médecins scolaires à tous les enfants scolarisés en grande section de maternelle en France afin d’éviter l’apparition de troubles des apprentissages en particulier du langage écrit.

Parallèlement, cette équipe forme les professionnels de la petite enfance en France à un meilleur diagnostic et à une meilleure prise en charge des troubles neurovisuels et cognitifs chez l’enfant. Elle permet ainsi d’améliorer l’insertion scolaire et sociale de ces enfants, ce qui constitue une des priorités des Fondations Rothschild.

PROGRAMME SCALE UP ROTHSCHILD-ANTROPIA (ESSEC)

Antropia est le premier incubateur pour entrepreneurs sociaux en France. Il est logé à l’ESSEC, qui compte parmi les meilleures écoles françaises de management.

Cet incubateur promeut et accompagne le lancement et le développement de projets viables et innovants, dont la portée reste essentiellement sociale.

De nombreuses initiatives permettent de réelles avancées sociales à l’échelle locale. Toutefois, croissance et développement demeurent un défi majeur pour toute entreprise sociale. Partant de ce constat, les Fondations ont noué un partenariat original avec Antropia, dont l’objectif principal est de mettre en oeuvre pour certains entrepreneurs ciblés un accompagnement humain et financier afin d’atteindre une échelle à la fois supérieure et multiplicatrices.

Un encadrement de haut niveau

Pour démultiplier l’impact des entreprises sociales, il est nécessaire de coupler accompagnement humain et financier. Le programme Rothschild-Antropia est inédit car il autorise à l’entrepreneur sélectionné un accès pendant deux ans à:
<ul><li>Un expert senior en entrepreneuriat social</li><li>Des conseillers thématiques (fiscalité, finance, stratégie)</li><li>Des étudiants et diplômés de la Chaire Entrepreneuriat Social de l’ESSEC</li><li>Des formations collectives sur l’ensemble des questions clefs liées au développement des entreprises sociales</li></ul>

Le développement en France d’un entrepreneuriat social à valeur ajoutée

Le partenariat entre Antropia et nos Fondations peut jouer un rôle fondamental en soutenant à la fois l’initiative individuelle et l’application de solutions inspirées du marché comme réponse aux défis de la société française. Accompagner ces entreprises à l’échelle nationale permettrait de convaincre les autorités publiques et la société civile de la pertinence de l’entrepreneuriat social comme une réponse judicieuse aux problématiques d’intérêt collectif.

AS'TRAME

La Fondation As’trame apporte un soutien psychosocial spécialisé, court, et non médicalisé à toute personne touchée par une rupture de lien (deuil, divorce, maladie...) à travers son parcours intitulé RELIANCE.

Lorsqu’elles sont mal vécues, les ruptures de liens mettent en péril l’équilibre des familles et des individus, en particulier celui des enfants. Pour parer à ce problème, As’trame a développé 2 volets complémentaires de soutien :
<ul><li>Auprès des familles : parcours de RELIANCE et des accompagnements spécialisés si nécessaire. Le parcours dure six semaines et consiste en un entretien préalable avec l’enfant puis un suivi psychologique en cinq étapes.</li><li>Auprès des professionnels : à qui elle met à disposition son expertise par le biais d’encadrements et de formations ciblées payantes.</li></ul>

De l’accompagnement psychologique à l’entrepreneuriat social

Le parcours de RELIANCE a donné des résultats empiriques prometteurs. Pour que cette approche novatrice puisse devenir une véritable alternative pour la prise en charge des ruptures de liens, le modèle doit développer tant son autonomie financière que son assise médico-sociale.

Ainsi, les Fondations Rothschild et As’trame ont donc décidé de s’associer afin de développer un modèle d’entrepreneuriat efficace autour de cet accompagnement psychologique indispensable.

The Foundations invite these young artists to enrich their knowledge and abilities through participation in artistic and educational projects.

The Ecole Boulle: a marriage of tradition and modernity

The Ecole Boulle is France’s leading school for educational programmes in artistic crafts and applied arts.

The school’s prestige and aim to combine traditional methods and innovative ideas makes it a veritable "conservatory of technique and laboratory for innovation”.

The Foundations encourage openness and creativity within the school

Promoting educational travel
The Foundations helped establish an ambitious travel scholarship programme. The programme allows students to participate in a range of scholarly and discovery trips and classes abroad, located in cities such as Lisbon, Vézelay, Basel, Milan, Duisburg, Barcelona and Venice.

These trips are an integral part of the students’ curriculum and annual evaluation process. Upon their return, the students exhibit the fruit of their work in a designated space at the school in order to obtain their diploma.

A special exchange with Japan to encourage innovation
The Foundations also contributed to the establishment of an exchange programme between the Ecole Boulle and Tohoku University, a Japanese art school. Japan is reputed for being at the forefront of product design, architecture and packaging. The creation of similar partnerships with foreign art and design schools (in Italy, the United States, Spain, etc.) is planned over the next few years.

THE ACADÉMIE DU SPECTACLE ÉQUESTRE AT VERSAILLES

The Edmond and Benjamin de Rothschild Foundations have contributed to the establishment of the Académie du Spectacle Equestre (Academy of Equestrian Arts) at Versailles. The Academy offers integral training programmes devoted to equestrianism and artistic disciplines.

The Académie du Spectacle Equestre: excellence and precision

Conceived and founded by Bartabas, the Academy pays homage to the equestrian arts. It labours to pass on a form of knowledge and an artistic sensibility rooted in the Grand Siecle of 18th century France. Horse riders and dressers from around the world come to the Academy for its exemplary educational environment that combines knowledge of the equine with the artistic disciplines tied to equestrianism.

The Academy exhibits its work at festivals such as the Nuits de Fourvière in Lyon and the Fêtes de Nuit at the Domaine de Versailles. More recently, the “Opus 2008” show gave an impressive display of the results of this education founded on listening, perseverance and humility.

The Foundations support a unique school since its beginnings

Exemplified by its high standards, endeavour for perfection and manifest sense of social engagement, the Academie du Spectacle Equestre shares the Foundations’ values. For this reason, the Foundations have supported the establishment and growth of this unique educational programme for several years.

The Odéon: a workshop for European art

Built in 1782, the Odéon was bestowed France’s “national theatre” status in 1971.
The theatre combines prestige and proximity, a fact illustrated by the historic grand theatre in the 6th arrondissement in Paris and the more recent Ateliers Berthier located close to the city suburbs.

The Odéon maintains a reparatory of both classic and experimental plays. A new generation of French and European artists is developing here, speaking out for a theatre that is at once exceptional and accessible to the general public.

The Foundations for a partnership centred on openness and the youth

Fostering a passion for drama among the youth
The Foundations contribute to several projects aimed at acquainting the youth with theatre:
<ul><li>Acting and playwriting workshops</li><li>Dramatic readings</li><li>Visits to the Ateliers Berthier</li></ul>
Participants are often invited to attend a performance and meet with an actor. In this vein, the Foundations have supported the establishment of an educational project based on the play Trois contes de Grimm, newly adapted by Olivier Py, Director of the Odéon, in homage to the Grimm fairy tales.

Introducing students to the dramatic arts
The Foundations support the creation of theatrical arts workshops for students from targeted education zones. Through these projects, the Odéon breaks down its traditional walls in order to impact the youth in their daily environment. The theatre also invites this new public to come experience the dramatic arts on its own stages.

Produced in this spirit, the performance of Aeschylus’ Seven against Thebes was a great success in 2009, both in the historic grand theatre and in a variety of cultural centres.

Promoting emerging theatre companies
The Odéon and the Foundations pursue the shared goal of advocating the work of promising young theatre companies among the general public. The Foundations currently support the theatre in this innovative initiative. The Foundations also contributes to the Impatience Festival, which gives emerging theatre companies the opportunity to perform on the stages of the Odéon.

The first edition of this unique festival took place in May 2009, with great success. Young theatre companies revealed their creativity and professionalism while the public manifested its interest in inventive and original performances.

THE ARIANE DE ROTHSCHILD ART PRIZE

The Ariane de Rothschild Art Prize is truly unique in its use of an international jury to detect young talents. The Prize grants its recipient the exceptional opportunity to work in a studio and receive theoretical training at a prestigious fine art school.

The Slade School of Fine Art, home of contemporary art

Founded in 1871, the Slade School of Fine Art develops excellence in the fields of painting, sculpture and electronic media.

This London-based school receives approximately 100 students in Masters and research programmes in the field of contemporary art.

The Foundations’ Ariane de Rothschild Art Prize: a unique artist-in-residence programme

The Ariane de Rothschild Art Prize is in keeping with the innovative tradition of the Foundations. The Prize is focused on painting, but also includes other artistic mediums such as photography, video and installation, providing that the work offers an interpretation of traditional painting techniques in a modern light.

The selection process is carried out by a prestigious jury including MoMA and the New Museum of New York, the Tate Modern of London and other experts in contemporary art. Before 1st prize is awarded, all selected works are featured in an exhibition open to the public and included in a published catalogue.

First launched in Portugal in 2005, the Prize was organised for a second time in 2008, this time in Belgium. The country chosen for the next edition of the Prize will soon be announced.

THE CENTRE FOR THE PROTECTION OF JEWISH CHILDREN

The Centre for the Protection of Jewish Children (OPEJ – Oeuvre de protection des enfants juifs) was created after World War II in order to meet the urgent need to care for Jewish children whose parents had been deported.

Supported since its foundation by the Rothschilds, the OPEJ has maintained its original mission of helping young people by offering a structured environment in which they may learn to confront the difficulties in their lives and the challenges of society. Loyal to its history but always with an eye to the future, the work of OPEJ maintains a resolutely open-minded and multicultural outlook.

OPEJ: promoting guidance, protection and education for children and adolescents

In its two social housing centres for children, the OPEJ welcomes young people entrusted by public authorities in need of a living environment in which they may thrive. A team of educators, psychologists, speech therapists and other professionals tend to these children daily. They encourage the children to develop their identity and help facilitate their social integration.

The OPEJ also offers an Open Environment Educational Service, which provides youths in difficulty with educational and psychological assistance in conjunction with their families.

Three Specialised Prevention Clubs support children and adolescents experiencing personal, family, social or professional difficulties through teams of social workers.

Finally, the OPEJ is also available for families in difficulty through its Centre for Families and Cultures, created in 2003 to restore the social and cultural significance of the family.

Education and social responsibility: a historic engagement for the Foundations

Through their historic partnership with OPEJ, the Rothschilds and the Foundations lend their support to young people and families in difficulty. They place a strong emphasis on encouraging first-rate education and psychological assistance.

Exchange, dialogue and openness characterise both the work of OPEJ and the values of the Foundations.

THE GRANDS ATELIERS - PREGNY 2001

Presided over by exceptional patrons, the Edmond and Benjamin de Rothschild Foundations pay homage to artisan traditions. Together with the Grands Ateliers de France, they share the ambition of placing ethics on the same plane as quality. In 2001, the newly-restored manege at the Chateau de Pregny, served as the backdrop for an extraordinary exhibition by the Grands Ateliers de France.

The Grands Ateliers de France: the passion of artisanship

Founded in 1993 by Jean Bergeron, the association of the Grands Ateliers de France assembles artisans who share the same concern for quality and a true passion for art objects. Restorers and craftsmen perpetuate their art over several generations, working with wood, leather, glass, textiles, metal, stone and rare materials.

The association unites 44 highly-reputed workshops that represent a multitude of hand-crafted disciplines. To maintain excellence of quality, the association asks artisans themselves to make the selection, and the artisans cast their votes by secret ballot, ensuring sincere picks. The Grands Ateliers de France encourages its members to draw upon their mutual esteem so that they may continue to perfect their artistry and craftsmanship.

The Foundations and the Pregny exhibition: unveiling the Grands Ateliers cabinet of curiosity

In 2001, Ariane and Benjamin de Rothschild invited the Grands Ateliers de France to celebrate the restoration of the Chateau de Pregny manege through their participation in an exhibition entitled "Precious Objects, Curious Objects, Rare Materials and Rare Professions".

The manege thus embraced its new cultural vocation by housing the artisans and their works during the exhibition, allowing them to bring to light their exceptional techniques and materials. This exceptional cabinet of curiosity bears witness to the values shared by the Foundations and the Grands Ateliers: a passion for artisanal traditions and the desire to preserve and perfect them.

THE THÉÂTRE FORUM DE MEYRIN

Located on the outskirts of Geneva, the Forum Meyrin has become one of the region’s major cultural centres through the sophistication, pertinence and intelligence of its programmes. With a particular affinity to the Canton of Geneva, the Foundations are proud to sponsor a theatre that contributes to the area’s artistic prominence.

Forum Meyrin: artistic excellence and social engagement

The Forum Meyrin is a cultural centre which plays a pivotal role in the Genevan community. Through the arts, it provides a platform for civic debate and brings together children, families and artists. Its varied and original programmes spark a dynamic and lively dialogue that promotes strong social bonds. Opening minds and nurturing artistic awareness, the theatre occupies a central position in the life of the city, offering a wide variety of performances open to the general public. The Forum Meyrin places utmost importance on education and organizes workshops to this end. The site hosts numerous exhibitions, and is rapidly becoming the cultural landmark in the region.

The Foundations and the Théâtre Forum Meyrin: a successful collaboration

The Foundations are proud to have lent their support to the Forum Meyrin in recent years. Tailored to suit a large public, the theatre’s programmes are marked by a high level of quality, a serious commitment to social and cultural engagement, and, more generally, a humanist outlook – an attribute shared by the Foundations. The latter have long sought to develop cultural activities in and around Geneva. Demonstrating an ability to fulfil its promises of excellence and diversity, the Forum Meyrin has emerged as an ideal partner.

The centre hosts renowned international performances and provides close guidance to artistic and community activities in the region. Moreover, it plays an important social and pedagogic role by organising events (including conferences, scientific discovery luncheons and writing workshops) that engage the youth, the elderly and immigrant communities.

Through their partnership with the Forum Meyin, the Foundations have opened the door to bold, socially aware art undergirded by a strong sense of community.

ÉDITIONS ARTULIS - ALFRED DREYFUS' CAHIERS DE L'ÎLE DU DIABLE

Editions Artulis specialises in publishing fine books, focusing particularly on fabrication as an essential complement to the text. As patrons of exceptional artisanship, the Edmond and Benjamin de Rothschild Foundations share a conviction with Editions Artulis: the care taken in designing a work assumes a unique significance akin to its content. They have therefore lent their support to the publication of the notebooks of Captain Dreyfus, written during his captivity on Devil’s Island.

Editions Artulis: the book as an art form

The publishing house uses form and content to distinguish the singularity, value and rarity of fine books. Since 1998, Editions Artulis endeavours to showcase texts through a unique presentation, doing so without shying away from the latest technology. The care taken in the choice of paper, ink and binding underlines the importance placed by these editors on fostering a passion for writing and editing. These publications evoke political and linguistic questions, sparking reflection on the role of the book in its current form.

The Foundations and Editions Artulis: homage to a man of honour who refused to capitulate

The Foundations are particularly attached to the protection and transmission of artisanship. Editions Artulis appealed to their patronage through its singular and fastidious approach to publishing. The Foundations have therefore chosen to support the launch of a work on Alfred Dreyfus’ Cahiers de l’Ile du Diable.

Alfred Dreyfus is a source of inspiration for the courage, integrity and struggle he represents. An important juncture in the history of French republican values, the Dreyfus Affair—and the man at its centre—led the Rothschilds to reaffirm their citizenship and social engagement to France at the beginning of 20th century.

This unique publication includes the transcription of his notes, critical commentary and a facsimile of one of these notebooks. A digital version available on the Editions Artulis website will accompany the book. The work shows how a man, deprived of everything, finds strength in deepening his knowledge of the humanities. Scheduled for wide distribution, this valuable account will encourage reflection on justice, anti-Semitism and the rejection of all forms of hatred.

THE LOUVRE MUSEUM

In the 19th century, the Rothschilds established themselves among the foremost private donors and patrons of the Louvre. The Foundations endeavour to continue this tradition for the development of the Museum and the preservation of its exceptional collections.

The Louvre Museum

The world’s most renowned museum includes eight curatorial departments: Paintings; Sculptures; Prints and Drawings; Near Eastern Antiquities; Egyptian Antiquities; Greek, Etruscan and Roman Antiquities; Decorative Arts, and Islamic Art.

The First French Republic established the Louvre as a museum during the French Revolution in 1793, unveiling the royal collection for the benefit of the French and international public. The museum also contains France’s imperial and republican art collections.

The Rothschild’s patronage has helped expand the collections of several curatorial departments through the donation of the Trésor de Boscoreale and many masterpieces. Thanks to the individual patronage of Baron Edmond de Rothschild, the distinguished Baron Edmond de Rothschild collection is a highlight of the Prints and Drawings department.

Baron Edmond de Rothschild’s legacy

A pre-eminent connoisseur, expert, collector and patron of the arts, Baron Edmond de Rothschild (1845-1934) assembled a collection of more than 60,000 prints and 3,000 drawings. With characteristic persistence and passion, he created one of the world’s largest collections of prints and drawings.

THE EDMOND DE ROTHSCHILD COLLECTION

Respecting the terms of this major donation in the 1930’s, the Louvre Museum brings the Edmond de Rothschild collection to life with regular exhibitions, highlighting different facets of these exceptional works of art.

The descendents of the Baron Edmond de Rothschild entrusted the collection to the Louvre Museum in 1935. The collection currently lies in the Prints and Drawings department and represents a veritable "museum of engravings". As outlined in the conditions set by the donors, the collection is a permanent exhibition in the Louvre and also features in special sharing in other museums.

The collection includes prints, rare books and two manuscripts, tracing the history of prints and drawings from the 14th century to the French Second Empire in the 19th century. The collection brings together some of the most illustrious artists who formed and shaped Western art.

The masterpieces of the Edmond de Rothschild Collection have gained international recognition for their outstanding quality.

Prints and drawings from the 15th to 18th centuries

An exhibition “Chefs d’œuvre de la collection Edmond de Rothschild. Dessins et estampes du XVème au XVIIIème siècle" (Masterpieces from the Edmond de Rothschild collection. Drawings and prints from the 15th to 18th centuries) was held at the Juan March Foundation in Madrid in 2004, and later at the Louvre in 2005.

Presenting 74 masterpieces from the Edmond de Rothschild collection, this exhibition marks the first presentation of the works outside of the Louvre Museum. The exhibition illustrated the fundamentals of the history of prints and highlighted the ties between drawing and painting and this art of reproduction. A catalogue of the exhibition was published by the Juan March Foundation.

Prints of Ideal China

The Louvre Museum has selected Prints of Ideal China as the 2009 theme for the annual exhibition of the Edmond de Rothschild collection. The exhibition presents an exceptional array of French engravings commissioned by Emperor Qianlong in the 18th century.

Masterpieces of the Italian Renaissance

The Casa Buonarroti in Florence presents Disegni dal Louvre: Il Rinascimento Italiano nella Collezione Rothschild (Drawings from the Louvre: The Italian Renaissance in the Rothschild Collection) from May to September 2009. The exhibition displays a selection of some 100 drawings by the most revered masters of the Italian Renaissance. A number of the drawings have only recently been studied and are exhibited for the first time at the Casa Buonarroti.

THE HALL OF NAMES AT YAD VASHEM

Built with the support of the Caesarea Edmond and Benjamin de Rothschild Foundation, the Israel branch of the Edmond and Benjamin de Rothschild Foundations, the Hall of Names houses millions of Pages of Testimony, short life stories of each individual Holocaust victim. This unique and poignant memorial stands at Jerusalem’s Yad Vashem, the world centre for Holocaust remembrance, documentation, research and education.

One hall, two million voices

The Hall of Names restores the personal identity of martyred Jews through its extensive collection of Pages of Testimony. The main circular hall houses two million of these short individual biographies, with space for six million in total. Blank Pages of Testimony are available to the public to help complete this invaluable collection of life stories.

The Hall’s centrepiece is a 10-metre dome displaying 600 photographs and extracts from the biographies. A still pool of water directly below the dome reflects these portraits, lending itself to the Hall’s truly meditative ambiance.

Individual Pages of Testimony are projected onto a glass screen at the far end of the Hall. Here visitors have the chance to read the life stories as well as access a computer centre with a database of Shoah victims’ names. Hall of Names staff are available to assist visitors with their research.

The Foundations help build a structure for stories

The Hall of Names concludes the historical narrative presented by the Holocaust History Museum at Yad Vashem. The state-of-the-art museum is a living memorial of the Holocaust, presenting literature, diaries, artefacts, letters, documentation, film and works of art. Offering a uniquely personal account of the Jewish Holocaust experience in a sober, contemplative setting, the Hall of Names is a powerful conclusion to the museum experience.

The Edmond and Benjamin de Rothschild Foundations financed the construction of the Hall of Names. The Hall is a compelling commemorative statement with a beautiful and personal presentation – one to impact generations for years to come.

THE FONDATION OPHTALMOLOGIQUE ADOLPHE DE ROTHSCHILD

In 1886, Baron Adolphe de Rothschild expressed his desire to create a hospital dedicated to two principles:
<ul><li>Specialisation: ophthalmology and neurosciences</li><li>Excellence: remaining at the forefront of medical and technological advances</li></ul>
Today, the Foundation is a private and non-profit medical facility, which has been associated with the French public hospital service since 1990. It combines two dimensions in its strategy: clinical care and research.

Specialised expertise and international recognition

The hospital encompasses cutting-edge technology and first-rate medical and surgical teams. It is recognised worldwide in its areas of specialisation, namely ophthalmology and neurology. In France, the hospital is positioned first for cataract, myopia and cerebral aneurysm treatments and second for glaucoma and retinal problems (ranking published in 2008 in the French magazine, Le Point).

An innovative research centre

The Foundation also supports clinical and fundamental research in the neurosciences and ophthalmology.

As a university hospital, the number and quality of its publications in influential medical reviews (124 publications in 2007) sets it apart.

The hospital collaborates with the French centre for scientific research (CNRS – Centre national de la recherche scientifique) and the French health and medical research institute (INSERM – Institut national de la santé et de la recherche médicale) to develop research programmes in the following fields:
<ul><li>The role of the brain in cognitive processes relating to vision, with a focus on children (project run by Sylvie Chokron, in partnership with the CNRS)</li><li>Retinal prosthesis through electric stimulation of retinal neurons (project lead by Professor José-Alain Sahel, in partnership with INSERM)</li></ul>

The Fondation Ophtalmologique Adolphe de Rothschild is the cornerstone of the Rothschilds’ commitment to care and research in the medical field. Throughout its history, the hospital and research centre has maintained a tradition of excellence and equality thanks to the quality of its doctors and scientists.

THE LIFE SCIENCES INSTITUTE

A site of information and exchange, the Life Sciences Institute (ISV – Institut des Sciences du Vivant) sensitises the public to the evolution of science and its impact on society through the organisation of colloquia and conferences.

The Life Sciences Institute: bringing science and society together

Founded in 1985 through the initiative of Doctor Charles Mérieux and the Baron Edmond de Rothschild, the Life Sciences Institute in Lyon conducts biomedical research.

In an era when the growing complexity of science tends to distance it from the general public, the Life Sciences Institute looks to render science accessible and useful to all.

The ISV’s work focuses on the potential impact of scientific discoveries on our daily lives in the fields of health, nutrition and the environment. Topics of study include subjects ranging from mobile telephones and genetically modified organisms.

The Institute organises conferences based on these themes for decision-makers in the domains of research, finance and business.

The Foundations promote exchange centred on scientific discoveries

The Foundations have built a solid and active partnership with the Life Sciences Institute. Together with the ISV, the Foundations participate in the organisation of colloquia on themes such as “From the Animal to Man”, the human brain and even “When Dionysus meets Hippocrates”. These events are recognised and renowned for the expertise of their speakers and the quality of their audiences.

The Foundations’ support not only contributes to excellence at the Institute, but also to expanding discussion topics linked to new discoveries in the field of life sciences. This is especially the case for neuroscience, an area of particular interest in the medical field, long pursued by the Foundations.

THE ROTHSCHILD MEMORIAL PROFESSORSHIP

Neuroscience and ophthalmology are the focus of the Edmond and Benjamin de Rothschild Foundations in medical research.

In order to contribute to advances in clinical and fundamental research in these fields, the Foundations provide support for a neurosciences chair at the University of Geneva: the A. de Rothschild Memorial Professorship. This initiative introduces an innovative partnership between private philanthropy and university education in Switzerland.

The University of Geneva, a prestigious partner

Founded nearly 450 years ago, the University of Geneva numbers among the most renowned universities in Switzerland and Europe, particularly through the outstanding reputation of its medical faculty in fundamental research and clinical applications.

Long-time residents of Switzerland, the Rothschilds are especially motivated to uphold Geneva’s academic notoriety and international outreach.

The Foundations: commitment to academic excellence in Geneva

Created in 2007, the A. de Rothschild Memorial Professorship in neuroscience is granted for a period of five years to an internationally acclaimed professor who works closely with the University Hospital of Geneva.

The professorship is designed to offer training to a new generation of researchers and practitioners, particularly in the field of neurodegenerative diseases, such as Parkinson’s disease and Alzheimer’s. Such medical conditions present major challenges to the aging population and tomorrow’s society.

ARIANE DE ROTHSCHILD WOMEN DOCTORAL PROGRAM

In 2009, the Rothschild Caesarea Foundation launched an outstanding initiative: the Ariane de Rothschild Women Doctoral Programme. The programme awards four outstanding female doctoral students scholarships to the Hebrew University of Jerusalem (HUJ). Addressing the continuing under-representation of women in Israeli academia, the scholarships are designed to enhance the academic standing of talented women scholars in a variety of fields.

Hand-in-hand: scholarly achievement and family life

While Israel is home to an array of female scholars, the Ariane de Rothschild Women Doctoral Programme recognizes that there are several obstacles to their success. With high cultural value placed on family, many Israeli women already have children by the time they reach the post-graduate level. This situation often forces bright female scholars to relinquish their academic careers in order to support their families. The Ariane de Rothschild Women Doctoral Programme helps these women to continue with their research and raise their children by offering four-year doctoral scholarships covering full tuition and living expenses.

Scholars are selected on the base of their academic excellence and financial need. These criteria ensure that talented women scholars from diverse economic backgrounds have access to equal academic opportunities.

The Foundations and HUJ combine academic excellence and community involvement

The Edmond and Benjamin de Rothschild Foundations place philanthropy at the core of the Ariane de Rothschild Women Doctoral Programme. To this end, HUJ scholarship recipients are encouraged to volunteer in educational programmes or institutions during or after their studies. The women's service activity fosters the development of other young promising scholars.

By offering scholarship recipients the opportunity to give back to the community, the Ariane de Rothschild Women Doctoral Programme perpetuates the spirit of scholarship, education, equality and service.

THE ROTHSCHILD-WEIZMANN PROGRAM FOR EXCELLENCE IN SCIENCE TEACHING

Funded by the Rothschild Caesarea Foundation, the Rothschild-Weizmann Programme for Excellence in Science Teaching is a Masters degree programme for science teachers in Israel. Presenting teachers with the opportunity to expand their knowledge, the Programme aims to enhance the quality of Israel’s science education.

Reviving science education

The Rothschild Caesarea Foundation recognizes the need to review the content and format of 21st-century science education. Israel faces the dual challenge of adopting new standards in science teaching, while maintaining Israel’s academic credentials. The Rothschild-Weizmann Programme for Excellence in Science Teaching was designed to tackle these challenges.

The Foundations promote a cutting-edge teaching methodology at the Weizmann Institute

The Programme offers pioneering research, in-depth insight into contemporary topics, and promotes innovation in science education.
Through two options, it provides professional development opportunities for teachers with different science backgrounds:
<ul><li>A three-year Masters degree in Science Education, established within the Feinberg Graduate School at the Weizmann Institute of Science</li><li>A one-year programme for the development and implementation of field initiatives. This Programme goes beyond the Masters, empowering participants to become leaders of innovative initiatives in science education</li></ul>
Students of the Rothschild-Weizmann Programme also receive continued guidance from Weizmann Institute researchers. These seasoned scientists accompany participants as they initiate projects for research, development, and implementation of innovative activities in the field of education.

THE INTERNATIONAL POLAR FOUNDATION]]></TITRE>

The International Polar Foundation has the dual mission of scientific investigation and raises awareness of the problem of global warming in the Polar Regions. The Edmond and Benjamin de Rothschild Foundations participated in the establishment of this Foundation and support its educational and communications initiatives, notably among young people.

The International Polar Foundation: raising public awareness of climate change

Founded in 2002, the International Polar Foundation is a scientific organisation based in Brussels. Through its studies and scientific research at the poles, its primary objective is to inform the general public and raise awareness of climate change and its consequences.

To this end, the Foundation publishes educational reports and CD-ROMs designed for teachers and their students. The International Polar Foundation also organises conferences and seminars for the general public.

In the context of the International Polar Year—an ambitious scientific programme devoted to the Arctic and the Antarctic from 2007 and 2009—the International Polar Foundation began construction of the first zero emissions Antarctic research station: Princess Elisabeth.

Education, science and the environment: priorities for the Foundations

Educate, inform, and demonstrate: the Foundations contributed to these missions in collaboration with the International Polar Foundation. The latter is currently working to implement tools which will stimulate public interest regarding science and climate change.

The Foundations notably lent their support to EducaPoles, the educational website of the International Polar Foundation. Offering targeted teaching tools and projects, this website aims to build awareness of the importance of the Polar Regions and climate change among young people and in the world of education.

PEACE PARKS FOUNDATION

The Peace Parks Foundation was established with a bold aim: to restore harmony between the environment and socio-economic development in Southern Africa after years of civil war.

The Peace Parks Foundation: restoring regions for peace and sustainable development

The Peace Parks project originated in 1997 through the commitment of three visionaries: President Nelson Mandela, Prince Bernhard of the Netherlands and Dr. Anton Rupert, a South African philanthropist. Baron Edmond de Rothschild served as an international ambassador of the project.

This unprecedented initiative enables transfrontier populations to turn the page on civil war, and cultivate the natural resources and diversity of their territory.

Ten parks have already been created in Southern Africa. Transcending the boundaries laid during the colonial era, Peace Parks bring extraordinary territories together and encourage interregional cooperation, particularly in the development of ecotourism.

The parks represent a unique opportunity for these regions to commit to responsible economic development and achieve local stability. The areas are selected for their rich biodiversity, cultural heritage and economic potential.

Education – a key to sustainable development

An indispensable pillar of economic development, education plays an integral role in the project. The Peace Parks Foundation manages two training establishments for park rangers and hospitality professionals: the Southern African Wildlife College and the South African College for Tourism.

By training local communities in ecotourism, the colleges lay firm foundations for economic opportunities based on educational and participative tools.

The Foundations’ commitment to education and peace

The Peace Parks project combines several of the Foundations’ inherent objectives: education, mobilisation of local communities and sustainable development. With this partnership, they demonstrate their desire to actively participate in the development of these protected areas and the implementation of training programmes, notably in South Africa and Mozambique.

THE PAVILLON PLANTAMOUR

By contributing to the complete renovation of the Parc Mon-Repos Orangery, renamed "Pavillon Plantamour", the Edmond and Benjamin de Rothschild Foundations and the City of Geneva offer the Genevan population a unique centre designed for learning and local biodiversity. The Foundations also complied scrupulously with current environmental requirements.

Reviving an exceptional heritage site: the Pavillon Plantamour

In 1898, Philippe Plantamour bequeathed the Mon-Repos domain to the City of Geneva. Situated in the heart of the city, on the banks of Lake Geneva, the park is highly appreciated by Genevans for its eclectic architecture and rich vegetation.

The Orangery, a greenhouse that formerly held a botanical laboratory, is one of the park’s treasures. Remarkable for its Tuscan columns, large bay windows and glass canopy roof, it had yet to benefit from a comprehensive restoration.

Beginning in 2006, the Edmond and Benjamin de Rothschild Foundations, in partnership with the City of Geneva, financed the complete restoration of this building, renamed Pavillon Plantamour. A close collaboration between the Foundations and the City allowed for a restoration that preserves the site’s spirit and respects environmental principles.

With the "La Libellule" association, the Pavillon Plantamour becomes an educational site focused on the environment

The goal of the "La Libellule" association is to raise awareness and understanding of nature protection. To this end, it organises exhibitions, conferences and various events for schools and the general public.

A fundamental conviction lies at the heart of the association: the importance of field work. It is through field work that the "La Libellule" association achieves its mission of imparting the wonders and importance of nature to the public.

Founded in 2003, the association will call the Pavillon Plantamour home for the next six years. It will use this privileged position to organise events and welcome the public and school classes.

Protecting and developing the environment: the Foundations trust in education

The Foundations believe that education is an essential means of meeting current challenges such as climate change, pollution, difficult access to water and energy conservation. The Foundations also support the informative approach of “La Libellule” to maintaining the Canton of Geneva’s natural environment. The Foundations participated in the responsible renovation of the Pavillon Plantamour, demonstrating their respect for natural heritage sites. This unique collaboration introduces a pragmatic and effective approach to environmental issues.

ARIANE DE ROTHSCHILD FELLOWSHIP

With support from faculty members at Columbia Business School and Cambridge University, the Edmond and Benjamin de Rothschild Foundations have designed a unique training programme. The course is intended to boost capacity building in social entrepreneurs and encourage authentic and effective intercultural dialogue.

An unprecedented concept

The Ariane de Rothschild Fellowship focuses on developing skills in two fundamental areas of social engagement: dialogue and entrepreneurship. The goal of this dual approach is to create a transatlantic network of social entrepreneurs looking to encourage professionalism and innovation in the field.

The programme is held over two weeks on the Columbia University campus. It combines three essential components:

In addition to the campus programme, candidates also participate in extracurricular cultural activities in New York City.

The combination of social entrepreneurship and intercultural dialogue is what makes the Ariane de Rothschild Fellowship unique and innovative. The Foundations have created a first-rate executive education programme that meets two main objectives:

JORDI SAVALL

Music possesses a unique power: to spark dialogue and bring cultures together. It is to this end that the Edmond and Benjamin de Rothschild Foundations lend their loyal support to Jordi Savall and his musical training programmes.

Jordi Savall: a virtuoso in all musical traditions

A Catalan artist and world citizen, Jordi Savall is an unparalleled maestro. His repertory extends from medieval song books to Mozart’s operas, from the Italian Renaissance to Monteverdi’s Orféo, from ballet music to popular melodies.

Jordi Savall collects and revives forgotten masterpieces. An unmatched virtuoso with the viola da gamba, he recently cemented his fame with his interpretation of the work of Marin Marais featured in the film Tous les matins du monde, directed by Alain Corneau.

Learned soloists, teachers and creators, Jordi Savall and his wife, the soprano Montserrat Figueras, seek to revivify a little-known musical universe marked by knowledge and emotion.

The Foundations and Jordi Savall: a harmonious team

Through its diversity, music plays an essential role in enriching cultural mixing and the development of knowledge and exchange. The Foundations share this vision in common with Jordi Savall and Montserrat Figueras. Their rigorous research and contrasting interpretations are a constant invitation to discovery and dialogue.

A close collaboration has developed with the Foundations around the composition of the book and compact disc package, Jerusalem. This composition, inspired by the city’s tumultuous history, is an ambitious opportunity to spur dialogue. The unique project pays homage to both diversity and unity. It contributes to our understanding and recognition of the Other.

Along with Jordi Savall and his wife, the Foundations have also committed themselves to promoting respect between cultures by supporting the Fontfroide Festival, which takes place each summer in southern France. The Fontfroide Abbey is a special site conductive to the delights of the senses, universal reflection and dialogue. Musicians from around the world come to the Abbey to play a multiethnic repertory and to participate in round table discussions on the theme of intercultural exchange.

UNIVERSITY OF CAMBRIDGE

The Foundations have committed to an exceptional partnership with the University of Cambridge. They lend their particular support to the Centre for History and Economics, affiliated with the illustrious King’s College. They also contribute to the development of the Centre for Muslim Jewish Relations, affiliated with the Woolf Institute of Abrahamic Faiths.

The Foundations promote an interdisciplinary framework through the Centre for History and Economics

The Centre for History and Economics has developed a bold interdisciplinary scholarship based on the exchange of knowledge and the intersection of two historically independent disciplines. Supported by the Foundations, this approach is particularly innovative against the University’s traditional academic backdrop. The Foundations provide backing for research undertaken by Professor Gareth Steman-Jones and for the publication of a notable work in 2009 entitled "Religion and the Political Imagination".

The Woolf Institute: fostering intercultural dialogue

The Foundations also share a vision with the Centre for Muslim Jewish Relations, which is developing a new academic field of study through its research into the historical ties between the Jewish and Muslim communities. In 2008, the Ariane de Rothschild academic chair was created, placing specific emphasis on the medieval period in this field. The Centre also designs and deploys intercultural training programmes aimed, for example, at the police, teachers and religious establishments in the United Kingdom.

The University of Cambridge is also associated with the Ariane de Rothschild Fellowship, launched in 2009 together with Columbia University in New York.

DIALOGUE PRODUCTIONS

The Edmond and Benjamin de Rothschild Foundations support the bold artistic initiatives pursued by the London-based Dialogue Productions theatre company.

Dialogue Productions, drama training and intercultural dialogue

The theatre company Dialogue Productions was created in 1996 with the goal of developing cultural dialogue between the United Kingdom and Germany. The company quickly expanded its mission to include cultural exchange on a broader European and international level.

To this end, it prepares English-language productions of selected plays that are often unknown to the British public. The company notably helped discover the Francophone playwrights Eric-Emmanuel Schmidt and Wadji Mouawad.

Performances by Dialogue Productions typically explore contemporary themes, thereby cultivating reflection on current social, political and cultural issues.

The Foundations and Dialogue Productions: paving the way to cultural diversity

Dialogue Productions has identified theatre as a privileged platform for intercultural dialogue. The Foundations share their desire to encourage exchange by helping the British public discover the creativity of alternative artistic traditions.

Since 2007, the Foundations have assisted in bringing the play M. Ibrahim and the Flowers of the Qur’an by Eric-Emmanuel Schmidt to London’s Bush Theatre and the Edinburgh Festival. In 2008, they renewed their support for a production of Wadji Mouawad’s Wedding Day at the Cro-Magnons at the Soho Theatre. Both plays received enthusiastic reviews from London critics.

In addition, Dialogue Productions engages in a social and educational mandate, providing free workshops to London schools which focus on the prevalent themes from its productions.

THE MOSAÏCA CENTRE FOR INTER-RELIGIOUS COOPERATION

Located in Jerusalem, the non-profit Mosaica Centre for Inter-Religious Cooperation nurtures dialogue and mutual understanding between the city’s Jewish and Muslim communities. To this end, it has created the Jerusalem Inter-Religious Education Leadership Programme (JELP), with the support of the Edmond and Benjamin de Rothschild Foundations through the Rothschild Caesarea Foundation. The programme engages teachers and administrators from Jewish and Muslim Schools in East and West Jerusalem to facilitate exchange between the two religions.

The key is in the classroom

Mosaica operates on the premise that effective dialogue between Jews and Muslims can only occur under conditions of mutual trust, particularly when religious differences are concerned. It regards the classroom as a key area where perceptions of religion, culture and society are forged. In 2004, the Centre established JELP, a programme which uses education for the promotion of positive views that are conducive to inter-religious dialogue.

The programme aims to provide teachers from Jerusalem’s Jewish and Muslim schools with practical tools to cultivate an understanding of one another’s religious and cultural background. Participants gain a full scope of knowledge concerning the issues that have affected the two communities’ relations throughout history and politics.

The programme has two stages:
The Encounters Track for educators from Jewish and Muslim schools. A series of group and personal meetings infuses participants’ daily conversation with the theme and intent of openness to the “other”. The aim is to prepare participants to become initiators of within their schools.

The Project Development Track provides the opportunity to develop long-term educational projects in the schools that participate in the Encounters Track. Educators who have participated in the Encouters track plan and implement these projects with funding from Mosaica. The result is experiential-educational programmes for the schools. These programmes introduce students to the world, culture, religion and historical narrative of the “other”. The goal is to help students renounce preconceived notions and work towards acknowledging the differences between the two communities.

The Foundations facilitate a leap of progress

By supporting JELP, the Edmond and Benjamin de Rothschild Foundations are planting the seed of mutual understanding in Jerusalem’s Jewish and Muslim schools. The JELP pilot project started to engage Jewish and Muslim educators from 16 schools in East and West Jerusalem in 2007.

A comprehensive evaluation of the pilot programme demonstrated that JELP has positively impacted its participants, as indicated by a change in knowledge and attitudes of participating educators. This included the ability to accommodate the other’s narrative, to take a more nuanced view of the conflict between the groups, and to reassess preconceived notions.

With the continued support of the Edmond and Benjamin de Rothschild Foundations, JELP is set to extend these positive changes and promote mutual trust and dialogue between separate communities in Jerusalem. With the Foundations’ assistance, news schools are participating in the programme’s second class, which was launched in 2009.

ACUMEN FUND

The Acumen Fund’s mission was inspired by a simple observation: philanthropic generosity alone cannot eradicate poverty. The fund trains leading social entrepreneurs to conceive and implement creative solutions to the problems of access to water, energy, housing and health care.

Acumen Fund develops an innovative and profitable model for social development

The fund’s investment decisions are based on reasonable expectations and medium-term returns. Projects must follow three main principles:
<ul><li>have a significant social impact,</li><li>attain a level of financial autonomy,</li><li>target a large market as defined by the Base of the Pyramid rules. This concept helps companies identify the market potential of low-income demographic so that they can adapt their offer to meet this population’s needs and demands.</li></ul>

The Acumen Fund invests exclusively in projects that will generate revenue and return on investment within 5-7 years. At the same time, it oversees the project’s long-term future. All revenue collected at the end of the project is reinvested in the fund and allocated to other projects.

Partnership with the Foundations: focus on the health sector in India

Today, an increasing number of investments are made in Southern Asia and Africa. The Foundations support the actions of Acumen Fund in this region, notably in India with a clinical project dedicated to fighting pulmonary vascular diseases: the Pulmonary Vascular Research Institute (PVRI). Every year, 35 million people in developing countries suffer from pulmonary hypertension, and they receive limited treatment. The PVRI addresses this issue through the creation of a network of clinics with three objectives:
<ul><li>Research is carried out by experts on a volunteer basis</li><li>Education and preventative treatment is promoted through awareness programmes in the local communities</li><li>Direct treatment is available for people already affected by the diseases</li></ul>

The Foundations back a unique training programme for social entrepreneurs

The entrepreneur-manager is at the heart of a successful project. For this reason, the Acumen Fund has implemented the "Acumen Fund fellowship programme". Each year, high-potential candidates are selected for a one-year programme, which provides three months training in New York City. Following the initial training period, the Fellows are appointed to an investment project for nine months. This allows them to apply their skills to ensure the project’s success and durability.

The goal of the fellowship programme is to help talented professionals improve their leadership and negotiation skills. They also hone their understanding of markets composed of low-earning populations.

The Foundations support an efficient social entrepreneurial model

The Edmond &amp; Benjamin de Rothschild Foundations share a common vision with the Acumen Fund: social investments can and must be just as professional as financial investments. This is one of the programme’s founding principles.

Unltd India supports social entrepreneurs at the inception of their business, whether they generate revenues or function on a non- profit model. Its mission is threefold: sourcing the best social entrepreneurs, building expertise and coaching, advising on growth and fundraising. Unltd India and the Foundations have partnered to create a philanthropic fund, which focuses solely on small or large scale revenue-generation models.

Targeted and innovative support

At a time of an unprecedented crisis, when funding from governments and investors dry up, the "social business" model provides a useful response to pressing social needs. By focusing on financial autonomy and revenue-generation, Unltd India and the Foundations build a cooperation to support the sustainability of incubated projects through an innovative selection process: first, 20 to 30 social entrepreneurs are gathered in a one-week "boot camp", during which intensive coaching is provided in business techniques and strategy. Upon completion of this intensive seminar, up to three projects will be selected to join the Rothschild-Unltd fund for two years, including ad-hoc training and financial investment.

ERT TREAT VISION

The Technological Research Team TREAT VISION seeks to discover the fundamental links between the human eye and brain, conducting research on normal and damaged brains with both children and adults. The Edmond and Benjamin de Rothschild Foundations extend their support to this particular endeavour, as part as their core commitment to the development of scientific knowledge in ophthalmology and neuro-sciences.

The TREAT VISION team: investigating links between the eye and the brain

TREAT VISION was created in 2005 by the French Ministry of Research and Higher Education, the Laboratoire de Psychologie et NeuroCognition of the French National Centre for Science Research (CNRS), and the Fondation Ophtalmologique Adolphe de Rothschild in Paris. The team works to develop multidisciplinary research on neurovisual and cognitive functions and disorders.

Headed by Sylvie Chokron, Research Director at the CNRS, the team combines the fields of Neurology, Neurosurgery, Neuroimaging, Interventional Neuroradiology, Ophthalmology, Paediatric Ophthalmology, and Neuro-ophthalmology. The team’s researchers and clinicians endeavour to understand, prevent, diagnose and correct neurovisual disorders.

In addition to the Edmond and Benjamin de Rothschild Foundations, the team is supported by a number of scientific institutions, (the CNRS, the French Ministries of Research, Health and National Education and the Rhône-Alpes regional council). With this backing, the team pursues research and collaborative projects using new technology, such as functional neuroimaging. These projects are carried out both in France and on an international scale.

Prevention, diagnosis and treatment – priorities for the Foundations

With funding from the Foundations and in partnership with the French Ministries of Health and National Education, the TREAT VISION team recently developed a new system for detecting neurovisual disorders.
All children enrolled in the final year of French primary school will undergo testing by school doctors in order to eliminate certain learning difficulties, especially related to reading and writing.

In parallel, the team trains French professionals who work with young children to better diagnose and manage neurovisual and cognitive disorders. The team thereby helps provide improved social and scholastic integration for these children.

ROTHSCHILD-ANTROPIA "SCALE UP" PROGRAM AT ESSEC BUSINESS SCHOOL

Antropia is the first incubator for social entrepreneurs in France. It is based at ESSEC, a top national business school.

The mandate of this unique incubator is to support the launch and development of innovative projects with a proven social purpose.

Whilst numerous initiatives can have a tangible local outreach, scaling-up social enterprise is a key challenge. Based on this observation, the Foundations have partnered with ESSEC-Antropia to develop an innovative and high level coaching of social entrepreneurs for growth and replicability.

To maximize the impact of social enterprises, it is necessary to combine human training with financial investment. The Rothschild-Antropia program is groundbreaking as it provides both financial assistance and coaching to selected entrepreneurs for two years, including:

The As'trame Foundation provides a specialised psychosocial and non medical support to any person affected by any form of link breakage (bereavement, divorce, sickness ...) through its methodology entitled RELIANCE.

When not treated adequately, link breakages threaten the balance of families and individuals, particularly children. To cope with this challenge, As'trame has developed two complementary tools:
<ul><li>For families, RELIANCE: specialized therapy last six weeks and consists of preliminary interviews with children and psychological counselling in five dedicated steps.</li><li>For professionals: expertise through mentoring and role training.</li></ul>

The RELIANCE process has yielded promising empirical results. This innovative approach can provide a breakthrough treatment for broken links.
